Not Marble, nor the Gilded Monuments (Sonnet 55)-Poem
By – William Shakespeare

This 55th Sonnet of William Shakespeare tells us about the limitations of worldly glory and grandeur. The great monuments build by kings and rulers, all are subject to destruction. The ravage of time and the agents of destruction destroy all such monuments and their memories. Only the rhyme of the poet and great poetry will survive the ravages of time.

In the first stanza, the poet tells us that whether it is gold or monuments of marble, made by the great kings and rulers, all will get destroyed one day but the magnificence of his poetry will live forever. Time is compared to a slut who loses its beauty and glow with passing time. Shakespeare has compared time unfavourably to a female subject.

The poet says that even if the destructive wars take place, they will only destroy the monuments build by the kings and the work done by the masons. He says that even the God of war or the destructive fire of war cannot destroy the written memories of your life even after your death. The poet continues to praise his subject. He says that death and enmity destroys everything but the written poetry is immortalized for all generations to come.

The ending couplet is a summary of the survival theme. It not only summarizes the sonnet but also seems to contradict itself. The talk of the judgment implies that the subject is alive and will be judged on that day.
