CBSE Revised Scheme of Studies 2026–27: Key Highlights
Here are the important points students should know about the latest CBSE update.
- Applicable academic sessions: Class 9 in 2026–27 and Class 10 in 2027–28.
- Main board examination subjects: Five.
- Languages: Two compulsory languages for the main board examination.

Here are the main points of the CBSE Circular:
In continuation of the Class IX Scheme of Studies for academic session 2026-27, available on CBSE Academic Website, the following shall be applicable in respect of students currently studying in Class IX (2026-27) and progressing to Class X in 2027-28:
- Inter-disciplinary Area: To align the introduction of this curricular area with the implementation schedule, the subject “Individuals in Society” and the “Modules of CT & AI” in Class IX (2026-27) & the subject “Environmental Education” in Class X (2027-28) shall not be the part of the curriculum for these batches.

- Students opting for Kaushal Vikas shall be assessed internally for this subject. However, a student opting for any of the 22 skill subjects (Annexure-I), shall have to appear in the Board Examination in the respective skill subject in Class X (2027-28).
- Other optional subjects: All other optional subjects, as available in 2025-26 scheme of studies, shall continue to be offered for Class IX (2026-27) and Class X (2027-28).

Apart from the five main examination subjects, students will continue to study the following curricular areas:
Language R3
Language R3 is the third language included in the scheme. Students will continue to study it as part of their school curriculum.
Art Education
Art Education remains a part of the curriculum, supporting creativity, artistic expression, and appreciation of different art forms.
Physical Education and Well-being
Physical Education and Well-being (PE&WB) continues to promote physical fitness, healthy habits, and overall student well-being.
Vocational Education
Vocational Education remains compulsory. Students can choose either Kaushal Vikas or one of the 22 skill subjects notified by CBSE, subject to the applicable scheme.
The assessment requirements differ according to the option selected, as explained below.
What Has Changed in the Revised CBSE Scheme of Studies?
CBSE has clarified that certain subjects and modules will not be part of the curriculum for students studying in Class 9 in 2026–27 and progressing to Class 10 in 2027–28.
Individuals in Society
The subject Individuals in Society will not be part of the Class 9 curriculum for these batches.
Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence Modules

Environmental Education
Environmental Education will not be included in the Class 10 curriculum for these batches when they progress to Class 10 in 2027–28.
These changes clarify the curricular requirements for the affected students and distinguish their scheme from arrangements applicable to other batches.
Is Vocational Education Still Compulsory?
Yes. Vocational Education remains a compulsory curricular area for students covered by the revised scheme. CBSE provides two options for fulfilling this requirement.
Option 1: Kaushal Vikas
Students may opt for Kaushal Vikas. Students choosing this option will be assessed internally in the subject.

No. The revised provisions are specifically applicable to students studying in Class 9 during 2026–27 and progressing to Class 10 during 2027–28.
Students already studying in Class 10 during the academic session 2026–27 will continue under the existing scheme applicable to their batch.
Therefore, students and parents should not assume that the revised provisions apply to every Class 9 or Class 10 batch. The applicable academic session is important.
What Should Class 9 Students and Parents Do Now?
The revised scheme is an important update, but students should continue to focus on their studies and follow the instructions issued by their schools.
Here are some practical steps for students and parents.
Check the Official CBSE Circular
Read the revised Scheme of Studies to understand the subject structure, assessment requirements, and provisions applicable to your batch.
Focus on the Five Main Board Examination Subjects
Students should build a strong foundation in their two languages, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science.
Regular revision, practice questions, and sample papers can help students prepare effectively for the Class 10 board examinations.
Continue Studying Other Compulsory Curricular Areas
The five main board examination subjects are not the entire curriculum. Students must continue participating in the other compulsory curricular areas prescribed by CBSE and their schools.
Follow School Instructions
Schools will provide further guidance regarding subject choices, internal assessments, vocational education, and other academic requirements.
Students should consult their teachers before making decisions about optional or skill subjects.
