लुई फिशर द्वारा लिखित कहानी ‘इंडिगो’, गांधी जी के चंपारण के गरीब किसानों के संघर्ष को बयान करती है। किसान ब्रिटिश बागान के साथ हिस्सेदारी करने वाले थे। एक पुराने समझौते के अनुसार, किसानों को 15 फीसदी जमीन पर इंडिगो का उत्पादन करना था और इसे मकान मालिकों को किराए के रूप में देना था। 1917 के आसपास, यह बताया गया कि जर्मनी ने सिंथेटिक इंडिगो विकसित किया था। इसलिए ब्रिटिश प्लांटर्स अब इंडिगो की फसल की इच्छा नहीं रखते हैं। किसानों को पुराने 15 फीसदी समझौते से मुक्त करने के लिए, उन्होंने उनसे मुआवजे की मांग की। अधिकांश अनपढ़ किसान इससे सहमत थे। हालांकि, अन्य ने इनकार कर दिया। अदालत जाने के लिए वकील लगे हुए थे। उस समय, राजकुमार शुक्ला एक शेयरक्रॉपर के अनुरोध पर, गांधीजी चंपारण में दिखाई दिए। उन्होंने गरीब किसानों के लिए एक साल तक लंबी लड़ाई लड़ी और उनके लिए न्याय पाने में कामयाब रहे। किसानों को अब हिम्मत मिली और वे अपने अधिकारों के प्रति जागरूक हुए। राजनीतिक और आर्थिक संघर्ष के साथ-साथ गांधीजी ने सामाजिक स्तर पर भी काम किया। उन्होंने गरीब किसानों के परिवारों की शिक्षा, स्वास्थ्य और स्वच्छता के लिए स्वयंवर का पाठ पढ़ाकर उनकी व्यवस्था की। यह भारतीय स्वतंत्रता के लिए संघर्ष को आगे बढ़ाने के तरीकों में से एक था।
