- Gandhiji launched nationwide satyagraha against Rowlatt Act in 1919. This Act had been hurriedly passed despite the united opposition of Indian members.
- This Act gave the government enormous powers to repress political activities, and allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years.
- Rallies were organized in various cities, workers went on strike in railway workshops, and shops closed down.
- Alarmed by the popular upsurge, and scared that lines of communication such as telegraph and railways would be disrupted, the British administration decided to clamp down on nationalists.
- On 10th April, the police in Amritsar fired upon a peaceful procession provoking widespread attacks on banks, post offices and railway stations. Martial law was imposed and General Dyer took command.

'स्वप्ने नसती तर-' काय झालं असत ? असा प्रश्न मी माझ्या मित्राला विचारला, तर त्याने क्षणाचाही विलंब न करता उत्तर दिले की, 'तर मला गाढ झोप लागली असती' कारण तो नेहमी सांगत असतो की मला रात्री स्वप्ने पडतात त्यामुळे माझी रात्री झोप होत नाही. प्रत्येकालाच रात्री स्वप्ने पडत असतात आणि ही स्वप्ने एवढी चतुर असतात की, ज्या स्वप्नात आपण पूर्णपणे रममाण झालेलो असतो. ते स्वप्न, दुसऱ्याच क्षणाला जाग आल्यावर जरासुद्धा आठवत नाही जर काही आठवले तर त्याचा अर्थ लागत नाही. म्हणजे स्वप्न आणि जग यांमध्ये अशीही एक अदृश्य रेषा असते.
मला पंख असते तर
असे म्हटले जाते की, 'मनी वसे ते स्वप्नी दिसे!' पण जर खरे पहिले तर, झोपेत पडणाऱ्याला स्वप्नांमध्ये बराच गोंधळ उडालेला असतो. विविध ओळखीची असलेली माणसे स्वप्नात दिसतात, कधी दिवंगत झालेली माणसेसुद्धा स्वप्नामध्ये भेटतात आणि आपण पुरते गोंद्धाळून जातो. झोपलेली लहान मुलं पाहताना खूप मज्जा वाटते, कधी कधी ती स्वप्नांत हसत असतात; तर कधी मुसमुसतात. काही वेळा तर मोठी माणसेसुद्धा झोपेमध्ये बोलतात, ओरडतात कारण ती त्या वेळी त्या स्वप्नांच्या जगात असतात.
रात्री झोपेत पडणाऱ्या स्वप्नांपेक्षा थोडी वेगळी अशीही स्वप्ने असतात. जी स्वप्ने आपण जागेपणी पाहतो. कधी कधी काही माणसे अशा दिवास्वप्नांमध्ये प्रत्यक्ष कृती करण्याचेही विसरतात. आणि नंतर त्यांचे प्रचंड नुकसान होते.
परीक्षा नसत्या तर
काही माणसांनी पाहिलेली अशी दिवास्वप्ने मोठ मोठी कामे करून गेली असल्याचे आपल्या निदर्शनास येते. पहा ना, आपल्या छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांनी आणि त्यांच्या मातेने स्वराज्याचे स्वप्न पहिले. म्हणूनच तर सतराव्या शतकामध्ये महाराष्ट्रामध्ये मराठी राज्य उभे राहिले. ज्ञानेश्वरांसारख्या एका १७ - १८ वर्षाच्या तरुणाने भगवद्गीतेचे मराठीत रूपांतर करण्याचे स्वप्न बघितले आणि मराठीतील श्रेष्ठ ग्रंथ 'ज्ञानेश्वरी' निर्माण झाली. शहाजहान बादशहाने आपल्या पत्नीचे मुमताजचे भव्य स्मारक उभे करण्याचे स्वप्न पहिले आणि त्यामधूनच जगातील एक चमत्कार, आश्यर्य ठरलेला 'ताजमहाल' साकार झाला.
स्वप्ने नसती तर आज झालेला आपला विकास झालाच नसता. आज आपण विज्ञानाच्या जगामध्ये जगत असताना विविध साधनांचा दैनंदिन जीवनामध्ये वापर करतो. ही साधने बनवण्याची स्वप्ने ज्या लोकांनी पहिली ती सत्यात उतरवली म्हणूनच आपण ती साधने वापरू शकत आहोत. माणसाने पंख नसताना सुद्धा अवकाशात उडण्याचे स्वप्ने पहिले आणि त्याने विमानाचा शोध लावला. ही स्वप्नेच नसती तर आज पर्यंत लागलेले विविध शोध लागलेलेच नसते.
स्वप्ने नसती तर
स्वप्ने माणसाच्या जीवनाला अर्थ देतात माणूस स्वप्न पाहतो आणि ते पूर्ण करण्यासाठी मेहनत घेतो. काहींची स्वप्ने पूर्ण होतात तर काहींची अपूर्ण राहतात. प्रत्येकाची आपल्या जीवनातील स्वप्ने वेगळी असतात. त्याप्रमाणे प्रत्येकजण आपल्या जीवनात वाटचाल करत असतो. ज्यांची स्वप्ने पक्की असतात त्यांना त्याची स्वप्ने पूर्ण करण्यासाठी कितीही अडथळे आले तरी त्यांना पार करून ते आपण पाहिलेले स्वप्न पूर्णत्वास नेतात; आणि तेव्हाच काहीतरी अनमोल साकार होते.
स्वप्न नसतात आपली जणू प्रगतीच झाली नसती. आपल्या जीवनाला अर्थच उरला नसता. स्वप्ने पाण्यात आणि ती पूर्ण करण्यात काही वेगळाच आनंद असतो. आपण पाहिलेली स्वप्ने जेव्हा सत्यात साकार होतात तेव्हाचा तो क्षण अविस्मरणीय असतो. जर स्वप्ने नसती तर हे क्षण जगता आले नसते. स्वप्नांचे आपल्या जीवनामध्ये एक महत्वाचे स्थान आहे.
