The mutiny in the sepoy ranks became a rebellion in 1857. There was general defiance of all kinds of authority and hierarchy.
Following were the reasons for discontent among the soldiers:
- Fear of New Cartridges: The sepoys were provided with bullets that were coated with the fat of cows and pigs. Before use, the soldiers had to bite these bullets. So they feared that it would corrupt their caste and religion.
- Grievances about Leave and Promotions: The sepoys were not granted leaves easily. They were also paid lower salaries as compared to the British soldiers. They were not given due promotions which enraged the soldiers and nurtured a sense of discontent among them.
- Grouse Against Misbehaviour and Racial Abuse: Earlier, the British officials had very friendly relations with the sepoys. They joined them in their leisure activities and talked to them in the local language. They also familiarised themselves with their customs and culture. They posed themselves as fatherly figures to all the Indian soldiers. But after the 1840s, there was a change for the worse. The British officers started considering themselves as superior. This grouse about the increasing misbehaviour and racial abuse on the part of their white officers were communicated back to the villages.
- Nexus between Soldiers and Villagers: Awadh was the nursery of the Bengal Army because a majority of the sepoys of the Bengal Army were recruited from the villages of Awadh and eastern Uttar Pradesh. So these soldiers had a close relationship with the villages. Such a link between the two had grave implications during the mutiny. When the sepoys defied their superior officers and took up arms they were joined very swiftly by their brethren in the villages.

- Nationalism is a feeling of people within state territory, which makes them develop a sense of collective identity and shares history or descent. This feeling works as a binding force among people.
- Before 1789, France was under the absolute monarchy. With the French revolution, Monarch was thrown out and a sovereign body of French citizens was established.
This revolution made France the nation-state and made many political and constitutional changes like:
- The idea of the fatherland and citizen was created to put stress on a community which enjoyed equal rights under the constitution.
- A new French flag was adopted to replace the former royal standard.
- The Estates General was elected by the body of active citizens and given the name of the National Assembly.
- Centralized administration and uniform civil laws were made for citizens.
- Uniform weighing and measurement system were adopted.
- French became the national language of France.
- In the name of the nation, new hymns and songs were composed and oaths were taken.
- Martyrs were honoured.
All these changes give a clear expression of collectivism and gave people true power to shape the destiny of France. Thus, France became a nation-state and the world got a clear expression of nationalism through the French revolution.

राधिका: "दिवाली कितना अच्छा त्योहार है।
प्रिया: "हाँ, सब त्योहारों में से मुझे दिवाली का त्योहार सबसे अच्छा लगता है।"
राधिका: "मुझे इस त्योहार के बारे में एक सबसे अच्छी बात यह लगती है कि इस दिन सबके घर में दिए जलते हैं और चारों ओर रोशनी होती है।"
प्रिया: "मुझे तो दिवाली के दिन पटाके जलाने में बहुत मज़ा आता है।"
राधिका: "हाँ, पर पिछले कुछ वर्षों में कई जगहों पर पटाकों के कारण लोगों को चोट लगने की सूचनायें मिली हैं।"
प्रिया: "मैंने एक पत्रिका में पढ़ा था कि पटाकों के कारण पर्यावरण प्रदूषित होता है।"
राधिका: "इसीलिए हमने सोचा है कि इस साल सिर्फ दिये और मोमबत्तियाँ जलाकर दिवाली मनायेंगे।"
प्रिया: "ठीक है मैं भी इस बार पटाके नहीं जलाउंगी और सिर्फ सबको मिठाइयाँ बांटकर त्योहर मनाउंगी।"
राधिका: "हाँ, पर्यावरण को प्रदूषित करे बिना और किसी को चोट पहुंचाये बिना दिवाली मनाने में कितना आनंद आयेगा।"
प्रिया: "इस प्रकार दिवाली वास्तव में एक खुशियों से भरा त्योहर बन जायेगी।"
