It is defined as the separation process in which solids are separated from the liquid. All the solids settle down at the bottom of a beaker and on top, a clear layer of liquid is obtained. Sedimentation is a process by which heavier impurities present in liquid normally water settle down at the bottom of the container containing the mixture. The process takes some amount of time.

The time of a place depends on the longitude that passes through it. Therefore, the standard time for each country is usually taken as the time of the central meridian that passes through it. India has a vast longitudinal extent. Since many meridians pass through it, it is important to adopt the local time of one central meridian of a country as the standard time for the country.  Thus, we need a standard meridian for the country.  In India 82 ½ °E longitude determines the standard time. This is known as the Indian Standard Time. This longitude passes through Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.

सामान्यतः उत्पादक एवं व्यापारी उपभोक्ताओं का शोषण निम्नलिखित प्रकार से करते हैं –
(1) मिलावट एवं अशुद्धता – मिलावट का आशय है वस्तु में कुछ सस्ती वस्तु का मिला देना। इससे कई बार उपभोक्ता के स्वास्थ्य को हानि होती है। चावल में सफेद कंकड़, मसालों में रंग, तुअर दाल में खेसरी दाल तथा अन्य महँगे खाद्य पदार्थ में हानिकारक वस्तुओं की मिलावट अधिक लाभ अर्जन के उद्देश्य से की जाती है।

(2) अधिक मूल्य – प्रायः दुकानदार निर्धारित फुटकर कीमत से अधिक मनमानी कीमत ले लेते हैं। अक्सर देखा गया है कि जब हम एक दुकान से महँगी वस्तु खरीद लेते हैं और वही वस्तु दूसरी किसी दुकान में कम कीमत में मिल जाती है। यदि हम अंकित मूल्य दिखाते हैं तो वह कोई कारण बता देता है; जैसे – स्थानीय कर आदि।

झूटी अथवा अधूरी जानकारी – उत्पादक एवं विक्रेता कई बार ग्राहकों को गलत या अधूरी जानकारी देते हैं। इससे ग्राहक गलत वस्तु खरीदकर फंस जाते हैं और उनका पैसा बेकार चला जाता है। वस्तु की कीमत, गुणवत्ता, अन्तिम तिथि, पर्यावरण पर प्रभाव, क्रय की शर्ते आदि के विषय में सम्पूर्ण जानकारी नहीं दी जाती है। वस्तु को खरीदने के बाद उपभोक्ता परेशान होता रहता है।

(4) घटिया गुणवत्ता – जब कुछ वस्तुएँ बाजार में चल जाती हैं तो कुछ बेईमान उत्पादक जल्दी धन कमाने की लालसा में उनकी बिल्कुल नकल उतारकर बाजार में नकली माल चला देते हैं। ऐसे में दुकानदार भी ग्राहक को घटिया सामान दे देते हैं क्योंकि ऐसी वस्तुएँ बेचने में उन्हें अधिक लाभ रहता है। इस प्रकार उपभोक्ता ठगा जाता है और उसका शोषण होता है।

(5) माप-तौल में गड़बड़ी – माप-तोल में विक्रेता कई प्रकार से गड़बड़ियाँ करते हैं; जैसे-बाँट के तले को खोखला करना, उसका वजन वांछित से कम होना, बाँट के स्थान पर पत्थर का उपयोग करना, लीटर के पैमाने का तला नीचे से मोटा या ऊपर की ओर उठा हुआ होना, तराजू के पलड़े के नीचे चुम्बक लगा देना आदि। इस प्रकार उपभोक्ता जितना भुगतान करता है उसके बदले में उसे वस्तु उचित मात्रा में प्राप्त नहीं होती है।

(6) बिक्री के पश्चात् असन्तोषजनक सेवा – जब तक उपभोक्ता वस्तु खरीद नहीं लेता, उसे तरह-तरह के लालच एवं बाद में प्रदान की जाने वाली सेवाओं का आकर्षण दिया जाता है किन्तु बाद में सेवाएँ उचित समय में प्रदान नहीं की जाती हैं तथा उपभोक्ताओं की समस्याओं पर कोई ध्यान नहीं दिया जाता है। परिणामस्वरूप उपभोक्ता परेशान होता रहता है।
