The major consequences of the disintegration of the Soviet Union for countries like India were:

  1. First of all, it meant the end of Cold War confrontations. The ideological dispute over whether the socialist system would beat the capitalist system was not an issue anymore. The end of the confrontation demanded an end to this arms race and possible new peace.
  2. Second, power relations in world politics changed and, therefore, the relative influence of ideas and institutions also changed. The US became the sole superpower and US economy the dominant economic system internationally.
  3. Third, the end of the Soviet bloc meant the emergence of many new countries. All these countries had their own independent aspirations and choices. Some of them, especially the Baltic and East European states, wanted to join the European Union and become part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Thus, the international system saw many new players emerge, each with its own identity, interests, and economic and political difficulties. It is to these issues that we now turn.

At room temperature, ethers are pleasant-smelling colourless liquids. Relative to alcohols, ethers are generally less dense, are less soluble in water, and have lower boiling points.

Anjan Karthi 3 years, 1 month ago

Ethers can either be treated by acid-catalyzed hydration of alkenes at 413 K, or by Williamson synthesis (Reaction between sodium alkoxide and alkyl halide to give alkoxy alkane and sodium halide).

‘A Thing of Beauty– is a poem taken from the poem titled – “Endymion – a poetic romance’ written by the famous poet John Keats. The poet says that a beautiful thing is a source of endless joy. It has eternal beauty which never fades away. A beautiful thing is like a shady shelter that gives us a sleep Full of sweet dreams, good health, and relaxation. Our attachments to the Earthly things are like a flowery wreath. They are traps that bind us to materialistic things and keep us away from eternal happiness. The Earth is full of hatred, greed, and negativity. According to the poet, the gloom and sadness caused by this negativity fade away with the positive vibes of the beautiful things that surround us. The poet lists out some of the beautiful things that surround us. As the saying goes -“Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. He says that the numerous creations of God like the Sun which gives us energy, the moon’s beauty, the trees which give us shade are the natural beauties around us. The various animals like the sheep that surround us make our world lively. The pretty flowers like daffodils make the world green and lively. The flowing streams of water cool and refresh us in the hot summer season. The forests which are full of the pretty musk rose flowers are a beautiful sight to the eye. All these are the things of beauty. Also, the stories of the brave soldiers who laid their lives to protect their people are beautiful and inspiring. These beautiful things are like a fountain of immortality bestowed upon us by God. They inspire us to live on and maintain our faith in goodness.

Gandhiji met Raj Kumar Shukla, a poor peasant from Champaran, at Lucknow national conference of Congress. Shukla wanted Gandhiji to come to Champaran to help the sharecropper peasants who were forced to grow indigo on 15 percent of their land and part with it as rent. Since the development of synthetic indigo, cultivation of indigo had become useless as the profits dwindled. The landlords wanted the peasants to pay compensation. To understand the whole situation, Gandhiji wanted to meet the high officials.  He tried to meet the commissioner of Trihut but was bullied and asked to leave the city. He defied the orders. His refusal to obey the orders and subsequently to submit bail created a tricky situation.  The spontaneous demonstration of a mass movement to help Gandhiji compelled the officials to drop the case against him. Gandhiji agreed to 25 percent of refund to the peasants because he knew that by refunding even a part of compensation would lead to loss of prestige for the British. Finally, the British landlords abandoned their land which was returned to the peasants. This was the first success on the road to Indian freedom.
