The village school was quite simple and small. It was attached to a temple. The priest himself acted as the teacher. He taught the alphabet and the morning prayer at the school. In comparison, the English school in the city provided a contrast. They gave instructions in English and taught modem science and music. They didn’t teach anything about God and the scriptures at the English school.

This phrase explains the contrast between the length of human life as compared to that of the sea. Human life is very short lived, transitory and temporary as compared to the sea which is a symbol of permanence, immortality and eternity. The poet uses the phrase ‘terribly transient feet’ to highlight the temporal nature of human life. The life of a human being is nothing as compared to the life of a sea. The sea has more power as compared to the human life since it is static in nature, stable and unlikely to be affected. Its continuance depicts its immortality whereas human merely lives around sixty to seventy years. The sea is an endless entity which survives much more than human life.

During the ancient civilization the Roman society was divided mainly among three classes :

(i) The Particians or the Rich.

(ii) The Plebeians or the Common People.

(iii) The Slaves.

In Rome, the slaves were employed in agriculture, mining, road construction, workshops and on ships. They were brutally exploited and as a result of it, many used to become crippled in the very young age.

Transhumance is a type of pastoralism or nomadism, a seasonal movement of livestock between fixed summer and winter pastures. In montane regions (vertical transhumance), it implies movement between higher pastures in summer and lower valleys in winter. The action or practice of moving livestock from one grazing ground to another in a seasonal cycle, typically to lowlands in winter and highlands in summer.

The Roman Empire had two types of territories – dependent kingdoms and provincial territory. The Near East was full of dependent kingdoms but they disappeared and were swallowed up by Rome. These kingdoms were exceedingly wealthy, for example Herod’s kingdom yielded 5.4million <i>denarii </i>per year, equal to over 125,000 kg of gold per year.

Certainly, these words of Mrs Dorling to the narrator give some clue about the story. Even when the war was not in its full fury, Mrs Dorling visited Mrs S. The narrator was Mrs S’s daughter. Mrs Dorling’s visits were becoming quite frequent. She used to come and went away with one thing or the other. In this way she went away with all the silver cutlery, vases and antique plates. The narrator’s mother had faith in Mrs Dorling but the girl had no faith in her. They had to leave Holland to save their lives. The war was over. Mrs S, the narrator’s mother, was now no longer in the world. She was dead.

The narrator went to 46, Marconi Street to meet Mrs Dorling. She went there in search of her mother’s belongings. She rang the bell. Mrs Dorling came out. She was shocked and surprised to see a young lady standing there. After the war, the narrator came back to her town. She refused to recognize the girl. The girl reminded Mrs Dorling of her mother. Mrs Dorling only uttered : Have you come back?

Naturally, Mrs Dorling didn’t expect Mrs S or her daughter to come back alive. She didn’t ask her to come inside. Her behaviour was cold and unfriendly. Mrs Dorling very unceremoniously turned the narrator away. She asked her to come at another time.

orse Questions and Answers by William Saroyan MENU Who is John Byro? Why did he not accuse the boys of stealing his white horse? print Print document PDF list Cite Expert Answers info JAY GILBERT, PH.D. eNotes educator | CERTIFIED EDUCATOR John Byro, in this story, is the original owner of the beautiful white horse which is mentioned in the title and which is stolen by the cousin of the narrator. We are told that John Byro is an Assyrian by birth, but he has learned Armenian in order to be able to speak to his neighbors. Byro knows that the horse the boys have is his horse. He looks into its mouth and tries to make it obvious that he knows what has happened—he says he would swear this were his horse were it not for the renowned honesty and integrity of the boys' family. He seems to want the boys to confess to what they have done and return the horse of their own accord so he doesn't have to get them in trouble with their family. It could also be that Byro, who is a foreigner, does not want to create trouble for himself by throwing around accusations within this community, to which he does not belong. The boys do indeed feel guilty, and they return the horse to John Byro overnight.

Army: This was another key institution of imperial rule, and its position came after the emperor and the Senate. The Romans maintained a paid professional army. The soldiers had to put in a minimum of 25 years of service. The army was the largest single organized body in the empire. Its strength had become 600,000 by the fourth century. The army had the power to determine the fate of the emperors. The success of the emperor depended on his control of the army.

69 BCE was a tumultuous year. Four emperors mounted the throne in quick succession in that year. Other than that, the first two centuries were free from civil war and were relatively stable. Succession to the throne was based on family ascent. A natural or adopted heir could be made the next emperor. Even the army strongly followed this practice.

Augustan Age is considered to be the most peaceful period of the Roman Empire. So, armed conflicts for expansion of the territory were rare. Gradual extension of Roman direct rule was more common. It was accomplished by absorbing a whole series of ‘dependent’ kingdoms into Roman provincial territory.

Affirmative action is based on the idea that it is not sufficient to establish formal equality by law. When we wish to eliminate inequalities that are deeply rooted, it is necessary to take some more positive measures to minimise and eliminate entrenched forms of social inequalities. Most policies of affirmative action are thus designed to correct the cumulative effect of past inequalities.

Special assistance in the form of affirmative action is expected to be a temporary or time-bound measure. The assumption is that special consideration will enable these communities to overcome the existing disadvantages and then compete with others on equal terms. Although policies of affirmative action are supported for making the society more equal, many theorists argue against them. They question whether treating people differently can ever lead to greater equality.

The fact is that in the spheres of education and health care India has done far less for its deprived population than what is their due. Inequalities in school education are glaring. Many poor children in rural areas or urban slums have little chance of attending schools. If they do get the chance, their schools have little to offer that would be comparable to the facilities available in elite schools. The inequalities with which children enter school tend to continue to hamper their chances to improve their qualifications or get good jobs. These students face hurdles in gaining admission to elite professional courses because they lack the means to pay for special coaching. The fees for professional courses also may be prohibitively high. Consequently, they cannot compete on equal terms with the more privileged sections.

Mr. Braun was speechless for a moment because he was amazed at Einstein's argument that one can look up facts in books, so there was no need to learn them. It left him speechless because Einstein was a student who believed in understanding facts and going deeper into the subjects. He was a student who was not merely interested in facts but rather questioned why and how of things. To hear such a statement from a boy who was a poor performer in class was overrated for him and something which left the teacher speechless for a moment.

- Bilateral and protostomial eucoelomate eumetazoa with metamerically segmented body and each segment bearing a pair of jointed locomotory appendages.

- “Arthopoda” literally means animals bearing jointed feet (Gr., arthron = jointed + podos = foot).

- These are extremely successful animals due to a protective exoskeleton and jointed appendages.

- That is why, more than 8 and half lac arthropod species are known as against about 2 and half lac species of the remaining animals.
