They taught their disciples after that they use to memorize it that was the only source of information .this is the story before the invention of paper but after the invention of paper textbooks takes the place of guru not fully but partially and after the invention of the internet in 1969 it opens vast collections of information .in this morden era there are many sources of information exist these days we have many books related to many subjects .the world changes because technology also changes with time. many people predicted that in the future we will have mechanical teachers instead of teachers as this time. But in my opinion, nothing can replace textbooks we have many advantages with our textbooks .there is no requirement of energy(electricity) and we can read them anywhere and books help us to explore more but in the case of pc or laptop or even smartphone makes us lazy and has many bad effects on us.
