Biocontrol refers to the use of biological methods for controlling plant diseases and pests.
Chemicals, insecticides and pesticides are extremely harmful to human beings and also these pollute our environment.
The use of biocontrol measures will greatly reduce our dependence on toxic chemicals and pesticides.
Biocontrol agents are which are useful in controlling plant diseases and pests are-
- The ladybird, a beetle with red and black markings and dragon flies are useful to get rid of aphids and mosquitoes respectively.
- Bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is used to get rid of butterfly caterpillars where dried spores of Bacillus thuringiensis are mixed with water and sprayed onto vulnerable plants such as brassicas and fruit trees and these are eaten by the insect larvae and in the gut of the larvae, the toxin is released and the larvae get killed.
- Trichoderma species are free-living fungi found in the root ecosystem these are effective as biocontrol agents of several plant pathogens.
- Baculoviruses are pathogens that attack insects and other arthropods and the majority of baculoviruses used as biological control agents are in the genus Nucleopolyhedrovirus.

The curve which shows the combinations of two goods and services that can be produced with fuller utilisation of a given amount of resources in the most efficient way and with a given production technology is called Production Possibility Curve. It is also known as Production Possibility Frontier (or PPF) and Transformation Curve. The following are the properties of a PPC.
i. Concave to Origin: PPC curve is concave to the origin. This is because of the increasing opportunity cost i.e. in accordance with the law of increasing opportunity cost.
ii. Increasing Marginal Rate of Transformation: The slope of PPC (MRT) shows, for the production of every additional unit of one good, more and more units of other good has to be sacrificed. In other words, as we move down along the PPC, the slope of PPC (or MRT) increases.
iii. Downward Sloping: PPC curve is downward sloping as more production of one good is associated with the decline in production of the other good.
iv. Optimum utilisation of resources: The points that lie on the Production Possibility Frontier are associated with full employment of resources and efficient utilisation of the available technology.

Democracy is accountable and responsive to the needs and expectations of the citizens because:
1) In a democracy people have the right to choose their representatives and the people will have control over them.
2) Citizens have the right to participate in decision-making that affects them all. This ensures that the working of the government is transparent.
3) Everybody expect the government to be attentive to the needs and expectations of the people.
4) It is expected that the democratic government develops mechanisms for citizens to hold the government accountable.
5) The opposition parties can also question and criticize the government policies. They keep a check on the ruling party and make sure that it does not misuse the power.

(a) We may say—
Sheela is absent because Sheela is ill.
But it is better to avoid the repetition of the noun Sheela, and say Sheela is absent because she is ill.
Definition. A word that is used to replace a noun is called pronoun.
(The word ‘Pronoun’ means ‘for a noun’.)
(b) If the number of noun is singular, persons of the male *** are referred to by ‘he. him. his, himself. Persons of the female *** take, ‘she. her, hers, herself. Non¬living things are referred to by ‘it, its and itself’
(c) If the number of a noun is plural, persons of either *** as also the non-living things, are referred to by ‘they, them, their, theirs, thems
(d) An animal is generally referred to by the neuter ‘it’, even if the noun denotes one *** only.
I watched the cow as it grazed peacefully.
However, if there is something in the situation that draws attention to the *** of the animal, then ‘he’ or ‘she’ may be used.
There is a cow with her calf.
For animals which occur in a story as characters or the animals which are thought of as members of the family, he, she etc may be used.
We have a monkey in the house.
Have you seen him ?
(e) The words ‘his’, ‘her’ and others derived from them are called possessive adjec¬tives. They must agree in gender with the words which they refer back. The gender of these possessive adjectives has nothing to do with the nouns they follow :
Ram gave a present to his mother. (not her mother)
Sita gave a present to her brother as well as to her sister. (not his brother or his sister) The cycle was restored to its owner. (not his or her owner)

Prejudice means to judge others in a negative way or to see them as inferior. People who are prejudiced may criticise the religious beliefs, habits, customs, dressing styles and languages of other people.
Discrimination is the result of prejudiced thinking and creating stereotypes. Discrimination occurs when people are treated unequally and are not given due respect because of the caste to which they belong or because of the work they do. In India, people are discriminated against on the basis of their caste, class, gender, religion, wealth and occupation. For example, people belonging to the lower castes are discriminated against in various ways. In many areas even today, they are neither allowed to enter into temples nor can they draw water from wells.
