Increasing participation of the people in the democratic politics of the country is broadly characterized as a democratic upsurge. Based on this principle, social scientists have characterized three democratic upsurges in the post-independence history of India. The ‘First Democratic Upsurge’ could be attributed from the 1950s till 1970s which was based on the participation of Indian adult voters to the democratic politics both at the centre and in states. Falsifying the western myth that the success of democracy requires modernization, urbanization, education and access to media, the successful holding of elections to both Lok Sabha and legislative assemblies all across states on the principle of parliamentary democracy were the testimony of India’s first democratic upsurge.

Ragging is an old and cruel practice, prevalent since the British era. Although, initially, it was limited to English colleges and universities eventually, it spread to Indian educational system as well. The original aim of this practice was to teach the juniors to respect the social hierarchy existing in schools, colleges and universities. Soon, it became a way to enforce unnecessary traditions and discipline them. It’s always someone in power, such as a prefect or an authoritative senior who likes to dominate. They do not think twice before misusing their authority. As a result, juniors and freshers are made to perform humiliating acts, which can be suggestive sexual, sarcastic and even physically and mentally traumatising for the victim. In extreme cases of severe ragging, the victim either commits suicide or gets killed. There are laws to punish the perpetrators. However, sometimes that’s not enough. Young students must communicate to their parents, college councellors or anti-ragging squad any life threatening issues they are facing at school/colleges. Schools and colleges must appoint trained counsellors, who can empathise with students and understand their problems. Above all, students and parents must be made aware of the ills of ragging and how it affects the victims and their families, only then ragging can be prevented.

Gandhiji believed that any struggle can be successful only when masses will support it. For participating in any movement masses must known the aim of movement. In India through local languages or mother tongue, communication with public could be done easily. So, Gandhiji advised nationalist to use mother tongue.

In addition, he believed that masses will felt more connected to movement when there will be communication in mother tongue. Gandhiji believed that mother tongue will play an adhesive role in dividing society and will help in bringing masses at single platform. Englishmen during these years believed that their language is superior than other language. Use of Indian language for communication by every Indian will change this notion and alongwith this, it will boost confidence in Indian citizen that their language has its own importance. Therefore, considering all above factors Gandhiji stressed on use of mother tongue.

Agrarian Structure Depends upon the land holdings amount of land a person holds. There is unequal distribution of land some people have lots of land and some people don't have any. The agriculture structure is how the land holdings have been distributed among people. Types of Landholdings: 1. Large Landers: Own large amount of land, earlier known as zamindars. 2. Medium landowners Small landowners: Have small amount of land and can make a profit. 3. Marginal landowners: These along with small family grow just enough for consumption of their family and do not have enough land to get surplus to sell in the market. 4. Landless landowners: Have no land of their own, work for others. 5. Tenants: Take land on rent and give the landowner a share of the profit. Positions of women Woman's position is low, they can't own land. Women are usually excluded from ownership of land, because of the prevailing patrilineal kinship system and mode of inheritance. They have equal property rights as the son but they are woman or they are scared to voice their oppose.
