The formal charge over an atom of a polyatomic molecule or ion is the difference between the valence electron of that atom in the elemental state and the number of electrons assigned to that atom in Lewis structure.

Mathematically, it can be expressed by following formula:

F.C. = [Total no. of valence e^– in free state] – [total no. of e^– assigned in Lewis structure] F.C. = [Total no. of valence e^– in free state] – [total no. of non-bonding pair e^– (lone pair)] – 1/2 [total no. of bonding e^–]

The factor of ½ is attached to the no. of bonding e^– because bonding e^– is shared between two atoms.

Metals have free electrons which can move from atom to atom easily, whereas non-metals do not, their electrons are 'bound' meaning they cannot move easily. That's why metal are usually good conductors than non-metals.

The Balkan region comprised modern-day Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece,Macedonia,Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro, and its inhabitants were broadly called Slavs.
With a large area of Balkan region under the Ottoman Empire, the spread of the ideas of romantic nationalism in the Balkans together with the breaking up of the Ottoman Empire made the situation even more serious.
The Ottoman Empire had not been able to become strong even after reforms and modern methods after an effort of nearly 91.00 years. Gradually, most of the European subject nationalities broke away from the Ottoman Empire’s control to declare themselves independent.
The claim for independence and political rights by the Balkan people was based on nationality. They gave examples of history to prove that they had once been independent but had subsequently been subjugated by foreign powers.
Thus the rebellious nationalities in the Balkans thought of their struggles as attempts to win back their long lost independence.
Soon various Slavic nationalities were struggling to define their identity and independence making Balkans region one having intense conflict.
The internal rivalries and jealousies made the Balkan states distrust and fear each other.
As the Balkans had become site for big power fights, the situation became even more serious. The fights were among the European powers who fought for trade and colonies and for naval and military powers.
Russia, Germany, England and Austria-Hungary wanted to gain control of the Balkan region causing many wars which culminated in the First World War.

Balkan region was a source of tension because of the following reasons: (1) It was a region of geographical, ethnic variation comprising Romania, Bulgaria, etc:and its inhabitants were broadly known as Slavs. (2) Large part of Balkans was under the Ottoman Empire and the disintegration of which created an explosive situation. One by one its European subject nationalities broke away from its control and declared independence. (3) Balkan peoples based their claims for independence or political rights on nationality and used history to prove that they were independent but subsequently subjugated. (4) The Balkan states were fiercely jealous of each other & hoped to gain territory. (5) Matters complicated because of intense rivalry among European powers over Trade & colonies as well as naval and military might. This led to a series of wars in the region and finally the first world war. (6) Spread of the ideas of romantic nationalism.

शब्दालंकार के तीन भेद हैं –

अनुप्रास अलंकार: जब काव्य में किसी वर्ण की आवृत्ति एक से अधिक बार होती है अर्थात् कोई वर्ण एक से अधिक बार
आता है तो उसे अनुप्रास अलंकार कहते हैं; जैसे –
तरनि तनूजा तट तमाल तरुवर बहु छाए।
यहाँ ‘त’ वर्ण की आवृत्ति एक से अधिक बार हुई है। अतः यहाँ अनुप्रास अलंकार है।

अन्य उदाहरण –

रघुपति राघव राजाराम। पतित पावन सीताराम। (‘र’ वर्ण की आवृत्ति)

चारु चंद्र की चंचल किरणें खेल रही हैं जल-थल में। (‘च’ वर्ण की आवृत्ति)
यमक अलंकार: जब काव्य में कोई शब्द एक से अधिक बार आए और उनके अर्थ अलग-अलग हों तो उसे यमक अलंकार होता है; जैसे- तीन बेर खाती थी वे तीन बेर खाती है।
उपर्युक्त पंक्ति में बेर शब्द दो बार आया परंतु इनके अर्थ हैं – समय, एक प्रकार का फल। इस तरह यहाँ यमक अलंकार है।

अन्य उदाहरण –
कनक-कनक ते सौ गुनी मादकता अधिकाय।
या खाए बौराए नर, वा पाए बौराय।।
यहाँ कनक शब्द के अर्थ हैं – सोना और धतूरा। अतः यहाँ यमक अलंकार है।
श्लेष अलंकार:
श्लेष अलंकार- श्लेष का अर्थ है- चिपका हुआ। अर्थात् एक शब्द के अनेक अर्थ चिपके होते हैं। जब काव्य में कोई शब्द एक बार आए और उसके एक से अधिक अर्थ प्रकट हो, तो उसे श्लेष अलंकार कहते हैं; जैसे –

रहिमन पानी राखिए बिन पानी सब सून।
पानी गए न ऊबरै, मोती, मानुष चून।।

When we are asked to calculate the distance between a point and any of the axes, we calculate the perpendicular distance between them.

Therefore, the point (-3,-4) is 3 units away from the y-axis and 4 units from the x-axis. This is because in case of either axes the co-ordinate of the other axis is zero.

Therefore the distance between the point P(-3,-4) and x-axis is 4 units.
