The Revolt of 1857 —the First War of Independence! By the first half of the 19th century, the East India Company had brought major portions of India under its control. One hundred years after the Battle of Plassey, anger against the unjust and oppressive British Government took the form of a revolt that shook the very foundations of British Empire. While British historians called it the Sepoy Mutiny, Indian historians named it the Revolt of 1857 or the First War of Indian Independence. The Revolt of 1857 had been preceded by a series of disturbances in different parts of the country from the late eighteenth century onwards. The Sanyasi Rebellion in North Bengal and the Chunar rebellion in Bihar and Bengal broke out in the late eighteenth century. There were several peasant uprisings in the mid- nineteenth century, the most important of which were those by the Moplah peasants of the Malabar and the Faraizi movement by Muslim peasants in Bengal. The first half of the nineteenth century also witnessed a number of tribal revolts. In this context, mention may be made of the rebellions of the Bhils of Madhya Pradesh, the Santhals of Bihar and the Gonds and Khonds of Orissa. However, all these disturbances were localized. Although serious and, in some cases, long drawn, these did not pose any serious threat to the existence of the British Empire.

Prudential reasons means विवेकपूर्ण कारण :- power sharing helps in reducing conflicts between various social groups and it is necessary for maintaining harmony and peace. Moral reason नैतिक कारण :- maintaining the spirit of democracy is moral reason for power sharing

Moral reason 1) power sharing leads to the stability of democracy 2) social conflict always lead to violence, power sharing prevents social conflict 3) Imposing the will of majority on minority may look like an attractive option, but in the long run it undermines the unity of the country. 4) the domination of majority is not just oppressive for minority, it brings ruin to majority as well. Panchayati Raj is a form of local government in villages where it serves a forum of a grievance where people’s problems are sorted. The reason for the slow progress of the Panchayati Raj System in India are as follows :

1. The lack of communication between the panchayat and the higher offices like district and state offices delays the process of being heard, and the issue takes a long time to get solved.

2. Corruption in the offices makes it difficult for the poor as their pleas get stuck in the hierarchy.

3. The government does not provide much monetary help in maintaining the panchayats which make it difficult for them to function.

Mrs. Pearson faced the common problem of being neglected by her family members, which most of the home makers today face. She worked for them day and night and made everything perfect but they never recognised her efforts. Neither did they thank her for the same. Instead, they directly demanded her for things and treated her no more like a domestic servant. They all went out, and returned home only when they needed something or they wanted to get something done, and then left her in the house alone again to enjoy themselves. Thus, Mrs. Pearson was disconsolate by the behaviour metted out to her by her own family members.
