The Class 12 English Core Sample Paper 2024-25 introduces several significant changes designed to test your analytical and critical thinking skills. Here’s a breakdown of the key updates:

  • Reading Skills: This year, reading unseen passages includes a variety of objective question types. Rather than just MCQs, expect very short answer-type questions, fill-in-the-blanks, sentence completion, true/false questions, one-word answers, and statement-based questions. Both descriptive and factual passages are included, with equal marks and a balanced number of questions. The Class 12 English Core Sample Paper 2025 is designed to help students familiarize themselves with the updated exam format and question patterns.
  • Creative Writing: The creative writing section has become more realistic and context-driven. Tasks now include writing letters or job applications based on newspaper snippets, making the tasks more practical and relatable. You will also see internal choices for most of the writing questions, including notices, invitations, and reports.
  • Literature Section: The literature section features two extracts from Flamingo and one from Vistas, with internal choices in the questions. Each extract from Flamingo includes 6 questions, and extracts from Vistas have 4 questions, all designed to test your comprehension in depth. Long answer questions are now more analytical, moving away from rote learning to assess your ability to think critically.
  • Section A – Reading Skills: The reading skills section contains two passages—one descriptive and one factual, with data, charts, and diagrams. Each passage carries equal marks, requiring a thorough understanding of both text types.

Read the following instructions very carefully and strictly follow them:

  1. This question paper has 13 questions. All questions are compulsory.
  2. This question paper contains three sections – Section A : Reading Skills, Section B : Creative Writing Skills and Section C : Literature.
  3. Attempt all questions based on specific instructions for each part. Write the correct question number and part thereof in your answer sheet.
  4. Separate instructions are given with each question/part, wherever necessary.
  5. Adhere to the prescribed word limit while answering the questions.
  1. SECTION A – READING SKILLS
  2. Read the passage given below:
    1. As a form of expression, graffiti is famously characterized by outlaw values; the creation and display of graffiti countered societal rules and was considered by some as vandalism. Not only was it symbolic of rebel values but was also linked to destruction of property. These links between graffiti culture and rebellion were age-old and some say, were popularized by hip-hop culture.
    2. Imagine waking up one morning, to see your walls smeared with black paint names, symbols, messages. The most interesting bit is that these wall artists were never caught red-handed. It was all done stealthily. It was almost as though people were marking their territory using painted symbols and slogans. The change was creeping in. Mobile numbers and captivating phrases gradually became marketing tools for free advertising. Catchy phrases tickled the curiosity and calls were made to those numbers.
    3. Over a period of time, there was a shift in perception. Blank walls beckoned invitingly and artists saw whitewashed walls as an opportunity to display their work in free and open settings. The city became one large canvas; the illegal ‘gang activity’ became an art form on display in walking galleries. Graffiti was gradually being replaced and the stigma of illegality was being dropped. There was a move to embrace rather than condemn.
    4. The colours, shapes, and subjects became cultural themes. What was once rebellious expression is artistic talent at its vibrant best, rich in images of plants, animals and unspoiled landscapes. The painted walls encouraged by residents and governments have created their own ecosystem a reconciliation of nature with man-made forces.
    5. The monotony and uniformity of urban life is today infused with human vitality and beauty. Cities speak proudly about the painted walls and clamour to be the first to preserve culture and history through these. Graphic displays of social awareness issues effectively and economically reach out to the common man. Silent art speaks volumes. Be it hygiene, conservation, education, or rights and duties the message is conveyed in an animated, colourful manner without being an imposition.

  3. Read the following passage carefully :
    1. News – If you can’t remember the last time, you saw a teenager reading a book, newspaper or magazine, you’re not alone. In recent years, less than 20 percent of teens report reading a book, magazine or newspaper daily for pleasure. More than 80 percent say they use social media every day, according to research published by the World Psychological Association.
    2. “Compared with previous generations, teens in the 2010s spent more time online and less time with traditional media, such as books, magazines and television,” said lead author of the book yGen and professor of psychology at ABC University. “Time on digital media has displaced time once spent enjoying a book or watching TV.”
    3. Swaner and her colleagues analysed data concluded from an ongoing study of a nationally representative sample of approximately 50,000 eighth, tenth and twelfth grade students annually. They looked at survey results from 1976 to 2016, representing more than 1 million teenagers. While the study started with only twelfth-graders in the 1970s, eighth- and tenth-graders were added in 1991.
    4. Use of digital media increased substantially from 2006 to 2016. Among twelfth-graders, internet use during leisure time doubled from one to two hours per day during that period. It also increased 75 percent for tenth-graders and 68 percent for eighth-graders.
    5. “In the mid-2010s, the average twelfth-grader reported spending approximately two hours a day texting, just over two hours a day on the internet – which included gaming – and just under two hours a day on social media,” said Swaner. That’s a total of about six hours per day on just three digital media activities during their leisure time.”
    6. In comparison, tenth-graders reported a total of five hours per day and eighth-graders reported four hours per day on those three digital activities. Consequently the spent time in the digital world is seriously degrading the time they spend on more traditional media such as print book and newspapers.
    7. The decline in reading print media was especially steep. In the early 1990s, 33 percent of tenth-graders said they read a newspaper almost every day. By 2016, that number was only 2 percent. In the late 1970s, 60 percent of twelfth-graders said they read a book or a magazine almost every day; by 2016, only 16 percent did. Twelfth-graders also reported reading fewer books each year in 2016 compared to how much they read in 1976, and approximately onethird did not read a book (including e-books) for pleasure in the year prior to the 2016 survey.
    8. There’s no lack of intelligence among young people. However due to over-dependence on digital media they find it difficult to focus for long periods of time and to read long-form text. Subsequently they find it challenging to understand complex issues and develop critical thinking skills.

    – Prerna The proliferation of stray dogs in Indian colonies presents a significant threat to public safety and health. Their aggressive behavior has led to numerous attacks on residents. The issue of stray dogs has escalated, causing disruptions and posing risks to residents. Their incessant barking and howling disturb the peace, while their aggressive behavior and propensity to overturn dustbins create chaos and health hazards. Moreover, their scavenging habits contribute to unhygienic conditions and disease spread, posing a threat to public health. Urgent action is imperative. A vaccination program can mitigate disease transmission among strays, while adoption initiatives offer them safe homes. Additionally, efforts to tame and train these dogs could curb their aggressiveness. However, addressing this issue requires collective community action. Collaboration is essential to safeguard both human safety and the well-being of these animals. In conclusion, by taking proactive steps such as sterilization programs, awareness campaigns, and community involvement, we can address the issue of stray dogs in our colony responsibly and compassionately.     – Staff Reporter, The News Nation New Delhi, 29 September: In a heartening endeavour to encourage pet adoption and sensitize the public about abandoned animals, NGO Paws Rescue organized ‘Barks and Purrs,’ an Adopt-A-Thon that provided homes to many stray pets including both cats and dogs. Held on 27 September, this event witnessed a remarkable turnout of compassionate animal lovers.
    Approximately 170 abandoned and stray animals found their forever homes, as families eagerly opened their hearts and homes to these furry companions. To ensure responsible pet parenting, new pet owners received expert training sessions, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge.
    Incentives such as free pet supplies, vaccinations, and grooming vouchers were provided, sweetening the deal for prospective adopters. The response from participants was overwhelming, reflecting the growing awareness and empathy toward our four-legged friends.

  14. I found a reflection of myself in that lad who had landed in my garden today. I could feel a sense of bond with him as we both are victims of life’s hard times. I lost a leg in war, while he burned a side of his face with acid. The only difference we has was in our perception of the world. What connected the young boy Derry with me was the feeling of comfort that he found in me as I did not treat him differently because of his disability. I could literally feel the pain he was undergoing and tried to inculcate a positive attitude in him. My effort was to apprise him that the confidence that our flaws become impediments to our success only if we allow them to be.
    Since I have learnt to take things in my stride, I tried using my experiential knowledge to educate him for his revival. I made Derry believe that he had two arms, legs, ears, and eyes plus a tongue and brain which meant that he was no less than all the rest. And that if he chose and set his mind to it, then he could get on better than the rest. If he chose and set his mind to it, then he could get on better than the rest. Our difficulties or flaws should not become the governing factors of our life because then bitterness and disappointment would seep into everything.

    Most often I wonder whom I would have married if I had not met Hana. She has been such a great support to me through my thick and thins that words of thanks would not just be sufficient. The incident where she went against herself to stand by me was my decision to help the American prisoner of war. I could very well notice how she had to struggle to reconcile her loyalty to her country with her moral duty. Not only she went against her loyalty but also assisted me in the medical operations and the anesthetics while I was operating on Tom (the American prisoner) because Yumi, the nurse had refused to do so. She even managed all the chores herself when the servants left our home in protest. Despite being married for so many years, she is still the same loving wife. She has been my emotional anchor and has helped me navigate any moral dilemma that I have faced until now.
