Rutherford's model was groundbreaking because it replaced the earlier Thomson model, which depicted atoms as a "plum pudding" with electrons distributed throughout a positively charged sphere. Rutherford's experiments, most notably the famous gold foil experiment, provided evidence for the existence of the atomic nucleus and laid the foundation for our modern understanding of atomic structure.
