दिनांक 8 मार्च 1992 को तमिलनाडु के पुडुकोट्टई जिले में महिलाओं द्वारा ‘अंतर्राष्ट्रीय महिला दिवस’ हर्षोल्लास से मनाया गया। इसमें महिलाओं ने स्वछंद रूप से साइकिलें चलाकर इस बात का प्रदर्शन करना चाहा कि वे अब आजाद हैं, किसी के बंधन और पुराने रीति-रिवाजों के दायरे में रहकर जीवन नहीं बिताएँगी। उनमें साइकिल सीखने व सिखाने की प्रबल इच्छा दिखाई दे रही थी। वे नवसाइकिल चालक गीत भी गा रही थीं। उनकी साइकिलों के हैंडलों पर लगी झंडियाँ. बजती घंटियाँ इस बात को सूचित कर रही थीं कि वे अब उन्नति की आेर अग्रसर हैं और सफलता की ऊँचाइयों को पाकर रहेंगी। एक साथ 1500 साइकिल सवार महिलाओं ने अपने जोश एवं बल से सभी को हक्का-बक्का कर दिया।
