Chemically, an amino acid is a substituted methane molecule wherein three of the hydrogens around the central carbon are replaced by an amino group, an acid group and an alkyl group. Whether an amino acid is actually acidic, basic or neutral depends on the alkyl group. If the alkyl group has an amino substituent branch, the amino acid is basic, if the group has a - COOH substituent, the amino acid is acidic and if it has no other functional group, the amino acid is neutral. These amino acids undergo polymerisation to form heteropolymers known as proteins.
