Protons are found in the nucleus of the atom. This is a tiny, dense region at the center of the atom. Protons have a positive electrical charge of one (+1) and a mass of 1 atomic mass unit (amu), which is about 1.67×10−27 kilograms.

Yogita Ingle 5 years, 7 months ago

Proton is a positively charged particle and has the following physical properties:

  1. Mass of Proton – The mass of a proton is equal to that of the hydrogen atom. A hydrogen atom consists of one electron and one proton. As the mass of an electron is considered to be negligible therefore it can be said that the mass of hydrogen atom is equal to the mass of a proton. The mass of a proton is 1840 times the mass of an electron.
Mass of proton = 1.676 × 10-27 kg = 1.676 × 10-24 g = 1.6726219 × 10-27 kg
  1. Charge of Proton – The charge of a proton is equal to and opposite to that of an electron. Thus, it has a unit positive charge.
Charge on a proton = + 1.602 × 10-19 coulombs

The dual nature of matter and the dual nature of radiation were revolutionary concepts of physics. At the beginning of the twentieth century, scientists unravelled one of the best-kept secrets of nature – the wave particle duality or the dual nature of matter andradiation. Everything is a wave and a particle!

Any material of plant, animal, microbial or other origin that carries geneticinformation and that passes it from one generation to the next.

Yogita Ingle 5 years, 7 months ago

DNA is the main hereditary material, but some contain RNA too, e.g. retrovirus. RNA mostly plays the role of a messenger in higher organisms. Though both are nucleic acids, why is there a difference in functions?  Scientists elucidate that, this is due to the difference between the chemical structure of DNA and RNA. For a molecule to be considered as genetic material, it must accomplish certain properties. They are as follows:

  • Replication- the ability to make its copies.
  • It should have chemical and structural stability.
  • Mutation- it should offer a chance for evolution.
  • It should possess a hereditary unit which follows “Mendelian inheritance”.
