Griffith’s Experiment

Griffith experimented with Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. This bacteria causes Pneumonia. Two strains of this bacteria were used R-strain & S-strain.

  • S strain
    • Smooth mucous polysaccharide coat
    • Resistant to immune system
    • Virulent
  • R strain
    • Lacks the coat
    • Destroyed by immune system of the host
    • Non-virulent

The experiment was performed in multiple steps.

  1. S-strain (virulent) was injected into mouse. It was found that the mouse died of pneumonia
  2. R-strain (non-virulent) was injected into mouse. It was found that the mouse remained alive .
  3. Heat killed S-strain (S-strain bacteria were killed by heating) was injected into mouse. It was found that the mouse remained alive .
  4. Heat killed S-strain & live R-strain were injected into mouse. It was found that the mouse died of pneumonia

Adsorption is a process which involves the accumulation of a substance in molecular species in higher concentration on the surface. If we look at Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen, these gases adsorb on activated charcoal. Meanwhile, we have to note that adsorption is different from absorption. The two processes involve totally different mechanisms.

For the adsorption process, two components are required,

  • Adsorbate: Substance which is deposited on the surface of another substance. For example, H2, N2 and O2 gases.
  • Adsorbent: Surface of a substance on which adsorbate adsorbs. For example, Charcoal, Silica gel, Alumina.

The accumulation of molecular species at the surface rather than in the bulk of solid or liquid is termed as adsorption.

In the text, Annes jung clarified this statement with her own example. She had made a promise to open a school to Saheb (jokingly) but another day when saheb asked him whether the school was ready or not, she could not answer that.It shows that promises made to poor children are never kept.Entire world is full of such hollow promises.

Riya Rana 5 years, 6 months ago

Promises that are made to children are indeed not kept can be explained from the text "lost spring" where author is very intrigued by the lifestyle of Saheb and his other friends and family and wanted to know about them, she asks him why doesnt he go to school which later she realised how vague her question must havebeen sounded, but to her question Saheb answers that there is no school nearby and when there will be one he will go to it. Authors furthur asks him that if she will built a school woulf he come? Listening to this Saheb's eyes shined which made the author very guilty because this was a promise of hers that was made to be unkept and then later did she realise that there must be many such promises made by many people like her to poor children. Hence, making promises which are made to be unkept fills these childrens' world with darkness and therefore have to live in a bleak world full of unkept promises.

Charging by induction

Riya Rana 5 years, 6 months ago

By bringing a negatively charged rod near the metal sphere, through induction all the positive charge is collected near the rod, then the other side of the metal can be earthed to remove all the negative charge. Hence in the end we get a positively charged metallic sphere.

By induction; using negatively charged another sphere
