  • Absolute Error: The magnitude of the difference between the true value of the quantity and the individual measurement value is called absolute error of the measurement. It is denoted by a| (or Mod of Delta a). The mod value is always positive even if Δa is negative. The individual errors are:

Δa1 = amean - a1, Δa2 = amean - a2, ……. ,Δan = amean – an

  • Mean absolute error is the arithmetic mean of all absolute errors. It is represented by Δamean.

Δamean = (|Δa1| + |Δa2| +|Δa3| + …. +|Δan|) / n =

      For single measurement, the value of ‘a’ is always in the range amean± Δamean

                So, a =  amean ± Δamean Or amean - Δamean< a <amean + Δamean

  • Relative Error: It is the ratio of mean absolute error to the mean value of the quantity measured.

Relative Error = Δamean / amean

  • Percentage Error: It is the relative error expressed in percentage. It is denoted by δa.

δa = (Δamean / amean) x 100%

Mrs Dorling is an important character of Marga Minco’s short story The Address’. She is introduced to us as the mother of a fifteen-year old daughter. Like her daughter, Mrs Dorling has a ‘broad back’. When the narrator rings the bell, Mrs Dorling appears wearing the green knitted cardigan of the narrator’s mother. This shows how mercilessly she is using all ‘nice things’ of Mrs S.

Mrs Dorling’s behaviour towards Mrs S’ daughter is quite cold, unfriendly and inhuman. When the narrator introduces herself as the daughter of Mrs S, Mrs Dorling shows no sign of affection. Her remarks are very shocking and uncharitable. She utters : “Have you come back ?” She is not at all pleased to receive the daughter of Mrs S. She doesn’t feel “convenient”. She very coldly asks her to come “another time”.

Mrs S was the mother of the narrator. The war in Holland proved to be a disaster for her. She was forced to part with all her precious and nice belongings. Mrs Dorling exploited her fear. She assured her that all things would be in her safe hands. But neither Mrs S nor her daughter ever received them again. The poor lady couldn’t survive the war.

When Howard Carter discovered King Tut’s tomb and his mummy in 1922, he found that the ritual resins had hardened and thus cemented the mummy to the bottom of his solid gold coffin. So he put the mummy in the blazing sunshine to loosen the resins.

But nothing melted. There was only one alternative.
The resins had to be chiselled away before removing the King Tut’s remains.

The author's grandmother had many admirable qualities in her. She was strong, spiritual, kind, generous, and courageous. She was a very strong woman who could adapt herself to any new challenging situation. May be she derived that strength from her devotion to God. For example, at the village she single handedly looked after herself and the author. Her real strength came to light when she was called to the city. Her life underwent change; her relationship with the narrator was deeply affected. She became more lonely and forlorn. However, she accepted the changes stoically. When the narrator went abroad, she endured the five year long separation courageously. At the close of her life also, she took a very courageous decision of not talking to any of the family members. She felt she had omitted to pray to God; so she decided to give all her time to praying to God. All the above mentioned examples prove she was a strong lady.
