  • Niccolo Machiavelli wrote about human nature in the fifteenth chapter of his book, The Prince (1513). Machiavelli believed that ‘all men are bad and ever ready to display their vicious nature partly because of the fact that human desires are insatiable’. The most powerful motive Machiavelli saw as the incentive for every human action is self-interest.
  • Luther argued that a person did not need priests to establish contact with God.  In 1517 he wrote the ‘Ninety-Five Theses’, challenging the authority of the church.
  • However, Luther did not support radicalism. The Catholic Church itself did not escape the impact of these ideas, and began to reform itself from within.
  • William Tyndale (1494-1536), an English Lutheran who translated the Bible into English in 1506, defended Protestantism. He said that clergy had forged the process, order and meaning of the ancient texts particularly because it was in Greek and Latin, inaccessible to the common man.

The going concern principle is the assumption that a business will continue to exist in the near future, in other words, that it will not liquidate or be forced out of business......, Hope it helps...

Yogita Ingle 5 years, 5 months ago

Going Concern Assumption :

This concept assumes that an enterprise has an indefinite life or existence. It means that the intentions of the business are to continue for sufficiently longer period of time. It will not be dissolved or liquidated in the immediate future. If a machinery purchased is expected to last (to be used for) next 10 year, then the cost of machinery will be spread over the next 10 year for calculating net profit or loss of each year (Dep. Charged.)

The full cost of the machine would not be treated as expense in the year of purchase itself. Market value of the asset is irrelevant and is not recorded in the balance sheet, as these assets are not going to be sold in the near future.

Mrs. Dorling was a greedy woman who did not return the belongings to the narrator. She herself had offered to take Mrs. S's things to her home to take care of them as long as they would be away. Mrs. S had entrusted the task of taking care of her things before leaving to save their life from Nazi soldiers. After the war when the narrator returned, and went to her house to take her mother's things back, she did not welcome her with a smile. She kept her standing at the door, and asked her to come some other day. Her selfish, inconsiderate and avaricious behavior hurt the already hurt narrator. Her intentions of misappropriating the author's mother's goods were quite clear.

Engine refers to the driving force that brings a machine to action. However, the engine also needs fuel to work. Similarly, with the arrival of the goldfinch, ‘a machine starts up’ as the entire tree livens up with the chitterings, singing, and commotion caused by the bird and its young ones. Thus, the tree is compared to a machine whose ignition is turned on by the arrival of the bird.
