More information SUBSCRIBE Everything You Need to Know About Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Medically reviewed by Stacy Sampson, D.O. — Written by Ann Pietrangelo — Updated on March 29, 2019 Symptoms Causes Diagnosis Treatment Medications for COPD Diet Living Stages Lung Cancer Statistics Outlook What is COPD? Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, commonly referred to as COPD, is a group of progressive lung diseases. The most common are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Many people with COPD have both of these conditions. Emphysema slowly destroys air sacs in your lungs, which interferes with outward air flow. Bronchitis causes inflammation and narrowing of the bronchial tubes, which allows mucus to build up. The top cause of COPD is tobacco smoking. Long-term exposure to chemical irritants can also lead to COPD. It’s a disease that usually takes a long time to develop. Diagnosis usually involves imaging tests, blood tests, and lung function tests. There’s no cure for COPD, but treatment can help ease symptoms, lower the chance of complications, and generally improve quality of life. Medications, supplemental oxygen therapy, and surgery are some forms of treatment. Untreated, COPD can lead to a faster progression of disease, heart problems, and worsening respiratory infections. It’s estimated that about 30 million people in the United States have COPD. As many as half are unaware that they have it.

Rights are legal and moral entitlements or claims of a person over other fellow beings, over society and over the government. A claim cannot become a right unless it is recognized by society. Claims that are recognized by society as rightful form the basis of rights. With changing times, the scope and meaning of rights also changes. Claims need to be reasonable, recognized by society and sanctioned by law. Rights are the basic requirement to sustain a democracy.

  • The shadow zone is the zone of the earth from angular distances of 104 to 140 degrees from a given earthquake that does not receive any direct P waves.
  • The shadow zone results from P waves being refracted by the liquid core and S waves being stopped completely by the liquid core.
  • A zone between 105° and 145° from the epicenter was recognized as the shadow zone for both the wave types.
  • The entire zone beyond 105° does not receive S-waves.
  • The shadow zone of S-wave is larger than that of the P-waves.
  • The shadow zone of P-waves appears as a band around the earth between 105° and 145° away from the epicenter.

There are four different types of earthquakes: Tectonic, volcanic, collapse and explosion.

  • A tectonic earthquake is one that occurs when the earth's crust breaks due to geological forces on rocks and adjoining plates that cause physical and chemical changes.
  • A volcanic earthquake is any earthquake that results from tectonic forces which occur in conjunction with volcanic activity.
  • A collapse earthquake are small earthquakes in underground caverns and mines that are caused by seismic waves produced from the explosion of rock on the surface.
  • An explosion earthquake is an earthquake that is the result of the detonation of a nuclear and/or chemical device.

  • In diatoms the cell walls form two thin overlapping shells embedded with silica.
  • diatoms have left behind large amount of cell wall deposits in their habitat, which accumulated over billions of years is referred to as ‘diatomaceous earth’ .
  • Most of them are photosynthetic and are the chief ‘producers’ in the oceans.

Considering two waves, travelling simultaneously along the same stretched string in opposite directions as shown in the figure above. We can see images of <a href="https://byjus.com/physics/wave-theory-of-light/">waveforms</a> in the string at each instant of time. It is observed that the net displacement of any element of the string at a given time is the algebraic sum of the displacements due to each wave.

Let us say two waves are travelling alone and the displacements of any element of these two waves can be represented by y1(x, t) and y2(x, t). When these two waves overlap, the resultant displacement can be given as y(x,t).

Mathematically, y (x, t) = y1(x, t) + y2(x, t)

As per the principle of superposition, we can add the overlapped waves algebraically to produce a resultant wave. Let us say the wave functions of the moving waves are

y1 = f1(x–vt),

y2 = f2(x–vt)

yn = fn (x–vt)

then the wave function describing the disturbance in the medium can be described as

y = f1(x – vt)+ f2(x – vt)+ …+ fn(x – vt)

or, y=∑ i=1 to n = fi (x−vt)
