The narrator
The narrator was a 37-year-old businessman. He proved as a great captain and father during the challenging and trying times after the irreparable damage done to Wavewalker by keeping his composure and wits. It won’t be wrong to say that the all lives on the boat could be saved just because of his seafaring skills.
Mary
Mary was the narrator’s wife. She was a courageous and brave woman. She stood by her husband after the wave badly damaged the boat. She steered the boat according to her husband’s instructions. She gave lots of emotional support to the narrator.
Suzanne
Suzanne was narrator’s seven year old daughter. She was very brave. She was critically injured at the time the huge wave struck the boat. Her eyes were terribly swollen because of the head injury. There was a cut on her arm also; however, she did not cry. She repeatedly told her father she was alright; the truth was she was not. She had to undergo six minor operations to remove the blood clotting from her brain.
Jonathan
Jonathan was Gordon Cook’s 6 year old son who had accompanied him on the round-the-world-journey. After the Wavewalker was terribly broken by the colossal wave, he also behaved very courageously. He gave a new strength to his father when he said he was not afraid to die if he could be together with the family. These words filled the author with new determination and courage. He resolved to fight till the end to save his family from being drowned in the stormy sea.

The Crusades had a bitter impact on the Muslim-Christian relations. The horrors of wars forced the Muslims to constrain all ties with the Christians. The need to protect the areas inhabited by mixed populations compelled the Muslims to further act more strictly with the Christians.
Apart from violence and terror, the Crusades had some positive impacts too. The Crusades gave a huge boost to commerce. The long-drawn-out wars created a constant need for the transportation of men and goods from the East to the West and vice versa. Goods from Damascus, Alexandria and Cairo flowed into the sea ports of Italy to be further shipped to Europe. The trading activities helped in increasing the influence of the Italian mercantile class on international trade. Thus, we can say that the Crusades had diverse effects on both Asia and Europe.

On the day of his meeting with Dr Ernst Weil, a nerves specialist, Albert was gripped by a nervousness that had been caused by worrying too much over what to tell the doctor. Upon meeting the doctor, he could not articulate his troubles but the young doctor put him at ease by saying that Yuri had already explained his situation beforehand. Yuri had said that Albert wanted to show that he had had a nervous breakdown and that he should be advised not to go back to school. Albert was embarrassed by this blatant stating of facts in front of the doctor. However, the doctor suggested otherwise and said that he wouldn't have come to see a doctor if there hadn't been any problem with him. The doctor understood Albert's predicament and came to his rescue, preempting his problems and telling him that he would write a prescription for a nervous breakdown. As a young doctor who had just finished his student life,he was well aware of the stress and anxiety that is part and parcel of student life so he showed empathy towards Albert. Albert said that if he could be let off from school then he would go to Milan where his parents were and get into an Italian college or institute somehow. The doctor was also favourably disposed towards Albert's decision so he prescribed a six month stay away from school and asked Albert to invite Yuri to meal as his remuneration. Dr Ernst Weil understood Albert's situation and acted consequently.

The two different views are examined below:
(i)Liberty and equality are opposed to each other : There is a view point that both liberty and equality are opposed to each other and they cannot go side-by-side. The main advocates of this view point are De Tocqueviflle and Lord Acton. According to Lord Acton, “The passion for equality has made vain the hope for liberty.” Equality curtails individual liberty. If everybody is considered equal in the eyes of law and equality is established in economic sphere than liberty will be curtailed. Nobody will have the liberty to earn money according to his own sweet will. If equality is established then the intelligent and hard working people will not be able to develop their personality to the full. People are of the opinion that nature has not created all the people equal. So liberty and equality cannot go side-by-side.
(ii) Liberty and equality are related to each other : In the modern age, most of the thinkers do not accept the view point that liberty and equality are closely related to each other. It is said that liberty in the absence of equality is meaningless. Prof. Laski, Prof. Towny Pollard and Maclver are the thinkers who support this view point. In fact, the liberty does not mean the same work and equal wages for all the people.
