Some important causes of the First World War were:
Aggressive Nationalism – With the increase in colonial competition in the 19th century, the European powers became more and more aggressive in pursuance of their trade interests. Each power was determined to expand its territories and gain new colonies at the expense of the other. As a result, the political atmosphere in Europe became explosive.
Imperialism – Establishing an empire had become both a financial necessity and a status symbol for the European powers. Nations like England, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and Japan were competing with each other, both individually and in alliances, to establish ever larger empires across Asia and Africa.
Secret Treaties – Otto Von Bismarck, the German Chancellor, entered into treaties with Italy and Austria and created the ‘Trilateral Union’. This led to a spate of secret treaties. Russia signed an agreement with France. England entered into treaties with Russia, France and Japan. Such secret pacts created an atmosphere of suspicion and hostility in Europe.
Immediate Cause: The immediate cause of the First World War was the assassination of Austria’s prince Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife by an extremist Serbian nationalist in the city of Sarajevo. As a result, Austria issued an ultimatum to Serbia. When Serbia refused to cow down to pressure, Austria declared war on Serbia and thus began the First World War.

Markings of the Axis Bone:

  1. Body or centrum (Corpus vertebrae) is a cylindrical mass on anterior side of the vertebra. It articulates with body of the vertebra below (C3).
  2. Odontoid process or dens (Dens axis) is a prominent rounded superior projection from the body.
This tooth-like elevation serves a stable point around which the atlas bone rotates (Gr., odous, tooth).
  3. Superior articular facet (Facies articularis superior) is a smooth, sightly convex surface that articulates with the inferior articular facet on the altas bone above (C1)

The atlas is the first cervical vertebra and articulates with the occiput of the head and the axis (C2). It differs from the other cervical vertebrae in that it has no vertebral body and no spinous process. Instead, the atlas has lateral masses which are connected by an anterior and posterior arch.

Sulphur, charcoal and potassium nitrate are the constituents of gunpowder. These can be separated as follows: Step 1: Dissolve the gunpowder in water. Only potassium nitrate will dissolve. Step2: Filter the solution. Filterate is the solution of potassium nitrate and residue contains sulphur and charcoal. Step3: Evaporate the filterate to vapourize water. Potassium nitrate will be left behind and is thus separated. Step4: Dissolve the residue in carbondisulphide which will dissolve sulphur but not charcoal. Filter the solution. Step5: Charcoal is separated as the residue. Step6: Evaporate the filterate to vapourize carbondisulphide. Crystals of sulphur are left behind.

Water (H2O) needs to be added and then filtered to get the nitre (KNO3). The filtrate is nitre (KNO3). Then again the residue is dissolved in carbon disulphide (CS2) where sulphur (S) gets dissolved . By filtration we will get the sulphur(S) and Charcoal (C7H4O) as residue
