पुरातत्विद शिल्प उत्पादन केंद्रों की पहचान करने के लिए कई तकनीकों का प्रयोग करते थे। जिन स्थानों पर शिल्प उत्पादन कार्य होता था वहा कच्चा माल और त्यागी हुई वस्तुओ का कचरा मिल जाता था। इससे हिस्टोरियंस शिल्प उत्पादन केंद्रों की पहचान करते थे। एग्जांपल के लिए यदि किसी स्थान पर किसी वस्तु को बनाने के लिए पत्थर और उससे संबंधित वस्तुओ का इस्तेमाल किया जाता था तो पत्थर के छोटे छोटे टुकड़ों को उत्पादन केंद्र पर ही छोड़ दिया जाता था और यही पत्थर इतिहासकार के लिए महत्वपूर्ण साबित हो जाते थे। छोटे छोटे टुकड़ों वाले पथरो का प्रयोग कई प्रकार की वस्तुओ के निर्माण में किया जाता था लेकिन अतिसुष्म पत्थर को उत्पादन केंद्र पर छोड़ दिया जाता था।
