There are four main types of air pollution sources: mobile sources – such as cars, buses, planes, trucks, and trains. stationary sources – such as power plants, oil refineries, industrial facilities, and factories. area sources – such as agricultural areas, cities, and wood burning fireplaces.

Harmful effects of air pollution depend on the concentration of pollutants, duration of exposure to the pollutants and types of pollutants that caused pollution.

In plants, it causes fruit damage, leaf damage, chlorosis, necrosis, mottled spots on leaves, less yield of crops and causes premature death of plants, etc.
In humans, it causes respiratory ailments like asthma, hay fever, allergic diseases, etc., cancer and genetic mutations.
Carbon monoxide (CO) released as a pollutant can combine with haemoglobin thus, preventing the supply of O₂ to the cells and causing death due to asphyxiation because it leads to damage of the brain.
The burning of fossil fuels, exhaust from automobiles, etc., release SO₂ and NO₂into the atmosphere. These gases are oxidised to sulphuric acid and nitric acid in the air. They get dissolved with the rainwater falling on the earth and form acid rain.
The various vehicle such as car, buses, trucks running on petrol release harmful gases.
