all the villagers sitting on the last benchers were feeling mixed emotions they are thankful for the teacher (M.hamel )for his 40 years faithful service , they are respect ful for their country which was not their anymore and they are regretful for not attending school . They neglect their own language and now the students like franz also feel regret for not learning his lessons properly .he have regret that he spend his time on sliding sar , seeking birds instead of learning his lessons . He was also embarrassed that how he called himself a French man in front of Germans as he even don't know how to speak or write French .

Bhanvi Chauhan 5 years ago

It was the time of Franco -Prussian war occupying territory after territory . Alsace and Lorraine, townships of France, too had been occupied. A shocking order from Berlin had come that French would no longer be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. This order hurt the pride of the local people. There is a sudden surge of patriotism in them. They suddenly realise that they don't know their language properly and yet they call themselves French. They now regret their negligence at not having learnt their own language. In order to show respect to their country, that was theirs no more, and for M. Hamel, who had served them for the last forty years, the elders of the village also went to school. Everybody was sad and grave.

Through the story of the bangle-makers of Ferozabad, the author expresses her concern over their exploitation in the hazardous job of bangle-making. Extreme poverty, hard work and dismal working conditions result in the loss of the childhood of children who are in this profession. The working conditions of all bangle-makers are pathetic and miserable. They work in high temperature, badly lit and poorly ventilated glass furnaces due to which child workers especially are at risk of losing their eyesight at an early age and get prone to other health hazards. The stinking lanes of Ferozabad are choked with garbage and humans and animals live together in these hovels. There is no development or progress in their lives with the passage of time. They have no choice but to work in these inhuman conditions. Mind-numbing toil kills their dreams and hopes. They are condemned to live and die in squalor, subjected to a life of poverty and perpetual exploitation.
