Society runs on a system of crime and punishment, where any wrongdoing meets its retribution. However, that is mainly to prevent further crimes. It does not make the introspect as much as does the guilt that follows the crime. In 'The Rattrap', in the peddler's view, the whole world is a giant rattrap that tempts people with "riches and joys, shelter and food, heat and clothing". People who he knew have either fallen prey to it or were about to, it being only a matter of time. By this reasoning, he justifies his own stealing of hard-earned money from a man who has shown him only kindness. Although he goes unpunished, in the conventional sense, his guilt by the end of the story makes him a different person altogether. In the end, he understands the value of human kindness.

Chemical formulas tell you how many atoms of each element are in a compound, and empirical formulas tell you the simplest or most reduced ratio of elements in a compound. If a compound's chemical formula cannot be reduced any more, then the empirical formula is the same as the chemical formula.

Sample mean = x = ( Σ xi ) / n
Sample standard deviation = s = sqrt [ Σ ( xi - x )2 / ( n - 1 ) ]
Sample variance = s2 = Σ ( xi - x )2 / ( n - 1 )
Variance of sample proportion = sp2 = pq / (n - 1)
Pooled sample proportion = p = (p1 * n1 + p2 * n2) / (n1 + n2)
Pooled sample standard deviation = sp = sqrt [ (n1 - 1) * s12 + (n2 - 1) * s22 ] / (n1 + n2 - 2) ]

FLAMINGO 1. THE LAST LESSON AUTHOR : Alphonse Daudet ( French short-story writer and novelist) INTRODUCTION:- The last lesson” stresses on the importance of education and the necessity to respect and learn one's own language. This story draws our attention to the unfair practice of linguistic chauvinism. It refers to an unreasonable pride in one's own language while disregarding all the other languages as inferior. SUMMARY :- Franz is afraid of going to school as he has not learned participles. He wants to enjoy the beauty of nature – the bright sunshine – the birds chirruping in the woods – Prussian soldiers’ drilling but resisted. On reaching school Franz notices unusual silence – Villagers occupying the last benches – teacher well dressed – everybody looked sad. M. Hamel announces: Today is the last lesson in French. Franz regrets and realizes why he had not taken his lesson seriously. Understands the reason why the teacher is well dressed and villagers sitting at the back. M. Hamel realizes that all three, he himself, the children, and the parents are to be blamed for losing respect and regards for the mother tongue. Hamel says the French language – most beautiful, clear, and logical language in the world. Always keep close the mother tongue to your heart as it is a key to the prison of slavery. Hamel becomes emotional and writes on the blackboard “Vive La France” Franz remembers the last lesson very well. BACKGROUND OF THE STORY:- The story, ‘The Last Lesson’ has been set in the background of the Franco-Prussian war that was fought in 1870- 71 between Prussia and France. The Prussians captured the districts of Alsace and Lorraine. New orders were issued according to which German language was to be taught in place of French in these two districts Q

Franz was a student in one of the schools in the districts of Alsace. Having a poor family set up, the boy was often asked to work in some mill for earning some money. But the family could not pay due attention towards his education, so the boy loved outside environment and wanted to enjoy it. In the school too, he often loved to work in the garden. He became fond of shirking from work and used to put off his learning as well as home task. But he was much scared of his teacher M. Hamel. In addition to this, the boy had an acute sense of understanding, feeling, recognition and respect. Entering the school, he sensed unusualness and calmness there. He was much surprised at this and was rather troubled to know that his teacher was leaving them because of an order from Berlin had banned the teaching of French. During the writing period, he noticed sad expressions over the face of M. Hamel. When the teacher taught a lesson in grammar, it left an indelible impression on the boy. He felt that the teacher was going to pour everything in their minds. Then the teacher wrote on the blackboard ‘Long Live France’. The boy was deeply moved and he recognised his teacher for his worth. Thus Franz had all the senses of head and heart.
