Nationalism is the foundation for the expansion of the modern nation-state. According to Leon- Baradat, loyalty "calls on people to recognize the interests of their ethnic group and to promote the conception of a state - a nation-state - to promote those concerns. It was an essential factor in the expansion of Europe. In the 19th century, a surge of romantic nationalism mopped the European landmass, modifying its countries. Some newly developed nations, such as Germany and Italy were designed by combining various territorial states with a traditional "national identity".
The French Revolution launched the movement toward the contemporary nation-state and also performed a key role in the birth of nationalism beyond Europe where radical philosophers were inspired by Napoleon and the Napoleonic Code, an apparatus for the political transmutation of Europe.
