Find the cost of 1 pen:

12 pens = Rs 40

1 pen = 40 ÷ 12  = Rs 10/3

Find the selling price of 1 pen:

8 pens = Rs 24

1 pen = 24 ÷ 8 = Rs 3

Find the profit / loss :

Cost Price > Selling Price ⇒ It is a loss

Loss = 10/3 - 3 = Rs 1/3

Find the loss percentage:

Loss percentage = (1/3 ÷ 10/3) x 100

Loss percentage = 10%

Answer: The loss is 10%

From 1772 a new system of justice was established.

(i)Each district was to have two courts – a criminal court ( faujdari adalat ) and a civil court (diwani adalat).

(ii)Maulvis and Hindu pandits interpreted Indian laws for the European district collectors who presided over civil courts.

(iii)The criminal courts were still under a qazi and a mufti but under the supervision of the collectors.

(iv)To bring about uniformity, in 1775 eleven pandits were asked to compile a digest of Hindu laws. By 1778 a code of Muslim laws was also compiled for the benefit of European judges.

My Childhood is an extract taken from the autobiographical novel, Wings of Fire by APJ Abdul Kalam. Dr Kalam, who was one of the greatest scientists of India and also the 11th President of India gives an account of his childhood days. He talks about the people, the incidents and the experiences that he had during his childhood which shaped his adult life. Although he was bom in a conservative society, his family, his teachers and his friends influenced Dr Kalam in his childhood and he imbibed values of secularism, honesty and discipline. Written in a very modest tone, the extract is very inspirational.
