Developmental activities exert tremendous pressure on our natural resources of a country and it also has an effect on human health and well being.  We see that there is overutilization of the natural resources and a lot of environmental problems are arising due to excessive use of modern equipment and technology.  Following are some important reasons responsible for the heavy burden on nature :

  1.   Increase in population causes exploitation of natural resources such as forests, water, fisheries and minerals at a rate far greater than their capacity to regenerate. As such, there is a degradation of resource in the name of development.
  2. Population pressure on land compels us to cultivate the available land more intensively by using chemical inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides which causes degradation of the soil.

  3. Further, the increase in population has increased the demand for fuel and timber and people resort to the cutting of trees for the same. With a reduced number of trees, there is an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and this causes air pollution. Also, industries and vehicles are major pollutants and affect the health of the people.

  4. Global Warming and ozone depletion are other consequences of development.
