The word 'janapada' means the land where the 'jana' has set its foot. Capital cities were fortified with huge walls of wood, brick, or stone. The rulers of 'mahajanapadas' depended on occasional gifts brought by people, The rivers Narmada and Brahmaputra flowed through Magadha. The term "janapada" means "the land where the jana or the people set feet and settled down". Some of the important janapadas were Avanti, Kosala, Vatsa and Magadha. Aryans were the most influential tribes and were called as 'janas'. This gave rise to the term Janapada where Jana means 'people' and Pada means 'foot'. The janas were headed by a king. The samiti was a common assembly of the jana members, and had the power to elect or dethrone the king. The sabha was a smaller assembly of wise elders, who advised the king. The term janapada composed of janas means “people” or “subject” and pada “foot”. Janapada's were the earliest gathering places of men, merchants, artisans and craftsmen akin to marketplace or town surrounded by hamlets and villages. Later, Janapadas became the major realms republics or kingdoms of Vedic India. Thank u! This answers are correct . ☺️
