The relationship between Rights and Duties are:
- The social interdependence of man results in the interlocking of rights and duties. As Mobhouse remarked, “Rights are what we expect from others and others from us”.
- Rights imply duties. Both are complementary. The right of one is the duty of others and vice-versa. Gandhi once observed, “Begin with the charter of duties of man and promise the rights will follow as spring follows winter”.
- Both become meaningless in the absence of the other. No person can enjoy rights in the absence of duties as a right without duty is nothing but shielded anarchism, ready to establish the idea of might is right. Similarly, duties without rights are nothing but glorified slavery.
- Rights are used for the development of a man’s personality. But he is under an obligation to use them for social welfare. This means that the individual owes to society as much as he claims from it.
