प्राचीन मेसोपोटामिया में कृषि मुख्य आर्थिक गतिविधि का अनुपात है । कठोर बाधाओं, विशेष रूप से शुष्क जलवायु के तहत काम करते हुए, मेसोपोटामिया के किसानों ने प्रभावी रणनीतियां विकसित कीं, जो उन्हें पहले राज्यों, पहले शहरों और फिर पहले ज्ञात साम्राज्यों के विकास का समर्थन करने में सक्षम बनाती हैं, जो उन संस्थानों की देखरेख में हैं जो अर्थव्यवस्था पर हावी हैं: शाही और प्रांतीय महल, मंदिर और कुलीन वर्ग के क्षेत्र। उन्होंने सबसे ऊपर अनाज (विशेषकर जौ ) और भेड़ की खेती पर ध्यान केंद्रित किया , लेकिन साथ ही साथ फलियां , साथ ही साथ दक्षिण में खजूर और उत्तर में अंगूर की खेती की। वास्तव में, मेसोपोटामिया की कृषि दो प्रकार की थी, जो दो मुख्य पारिस्थितिक क्षेत्रों के अनुरूप थी, जो बड़े पैमाने पर सांस्कृतिक भेदों के साथ अतिच्छादित थी। दक्षिणी या निचले मेसोपोटामिया की कृषि, सुमेर और अक्कड़ की भूमि , जो बाद में बेबीलोनिया बन गई, में लगभग कोई बारिश नहीं हुई और बड़े पैमाने पर सिंचाई कार्यों की आवश्यकता थी जो मंदिर सम्पदा की देखरेख में थे, लेकिन उच्च रिटर्न दे सकते थे। उत्तरी या ऊपरी मेसोपोटामिया की कृषि, वह भूमि जो अंततः असीरिया बन जाएगी , में अधिकांश समय शुष्क कृषि की अनुमति देने के लिए पर्याप्त वर्षा होती थी ताकि सिंचाई और बड़े संस्थागत सम्पदा कम महत्वपूर्ण हों, लेकिन रिटर्न भी आमतौर पर कम था।
