Initially, the peddler disappointed me as he robbed the crofter of his hard earned 30 kroners, despite the fact that he had offered him food, shelter and had also been very hospitable and welcoming to him unlike the people at other places he went to. And that too,he did so without a tinge of remorse. But as the story ends, the peddler wins everyone's heart by returning the money to edla and thanking her. The basic human nature in him had been aroused and he had decided to be honest then onwards, making a successful transition from a mean and petty thief to a kind human being.

Based on the properties, elements have been divided into two; Metals and Non- Metals. They have an important part in our daily life. Both metals and non-metals are useful in different ways. There is a large number of metals and non-metals in the world. Metals are elements that can conduct electricity and are malleable and ductile. They are hard and shining in nature. Examples are iron, aluminium, copper, silver and gold. It is widely used in our daily life for a large number of purposes. It is used for making cooking utensils, buses, cars, etc. Non-metals are good conductors of electricity. They are neither malleable nor ductile and are also brittle. Examples are carbon, sulphur phosphorus, etc. Carbon has two allotropes, diamond and graphite. Diamond is used as jewellery and graphite is used in pencil leads. All metals and non-metals have similar properties. But, the properties of non-metals are opposite those of metals. This chapter deals with the properties, reactivities and basic examples of metals and non-metals.
