Consumer Rights Essay: Consumer rights refer to the right to acquire information about the potency, quality, quantity, price and purity and the standard of the goods and services. In other words, consumer rights mean safeguarding the consumer against any unfair practices of the trade. Hence it is regarded essential for the course to know his rights. This is because consumer rights are important as he can decide regarding the purchases he makes. An important aspect of consumer rights is consumer awareness which means educating the customer about the goods and services he buys. In India, the consumer awareness campaign in the current times has been ‘Jago Grahak Jago’. This campaign facilitates the consumers to access a wide variety of services on a single platform.

Every country has its own consumer rights to ensure maximum protection for consumers. The various types of consumer rights are discussed below as follows: Right to Safety refers to the right of the consumers to get protected against the marketing of any commodity, services or goods which might inflict losses towards them.

Right to be Informed is defined as the right to be informed about the commodity, goods and services that they are purchasing. This information revolves around the potency, quantity, quality and price of the goods and services. Right to choose allows the consumer to have proper access to make a choice between the goods and the services. Thus they can take the decision judiciously.

Right to be heard refers to the right of the consumers to be heard by the consumer forums. This happens when a consumer wants to share their thoughts and voice their opinions against the purchase of a particular product or a service. Right to get redressal is regarded as one of the most important rights of consumers. This implies that their issues are mitigated or resolved by the consumer forum after their problems are heard. Right-to-consumer education concerns its focus on creating awareness of the consumers about the available consumer rights. This can be done by organising social media campaigns, print media advertisements, billboards and distributing leaflets and pamphlets. The consumer has certain duties as well. For instance, he shall look for ISI and hallmark before purchasing any best quality item. In addition, he shall also check for the maximum retail price and the expiry date before purchasing any goods. He should always insist on getting bills from the seller after the purchases are done.

Conclusion: To conclude, it can be said that consumers shall be aware of their rights and also it is the duty of the consumer forum of the nation to awaken the consciousness among the consumer, about their rights. The Consumer Protection Act of 2019 introduced in the Lok Sabha focuses on providing more power to the consumer regarding their right and maintaining more transparency in the information given to consumers about their rights. In addition, the government introduced an advertisement code which safeguards consumers against fake advertisements.
