Class X Exams, CBSE conducts exams under two schemes. School based exam scheme is for those who do not wish to move out of the CBSE System after Class X and board based exam scheme is for those who wish to move out of the CBSE System after Class X, who wish to join institutions/ schools/ Junior Colleges affiliated to Boards other than the CBSE.

It means if you wish to continue your studies in any CBSE school after 10^th, you need not to opt for board based exams. But there are many students who wish to move out of CBSE or stop their studies after class-10. Such cases may be as below-

1. Students stop their studies after class-X.
2. Students apply for admission in polytechnic colleges, ITI, skill development courses or any other institute that takes admission on the basis of their class-10 certificate.
3. Students transferred to such a place where there are no CBSE schools and they have to take admission to any state board school.
4. Students are willing discontinue their studies with CBSE schools and want to join state board.
5. Students going abroad for further studies.

Class X Exams

All such students must opt for board based exams just because some of these institutes may not consider your class-10 certificate as valid one. They may demand external board exam. Very recent example is Maharashtra Board which does not give admission in class-11 if someone has given CBSE School based exam.

As students from both the scheme get same certificate, so no one can guess, what had you opted for, school exam or board exam until you tell them or your school certify it. That is why; such boards will demand a letter from your school stating that the student has given external board exam.

Where you got confused is most of the parents have a pre-occupied mindset that they can judge the performance of their wards only in board exams. Schools may manipulate results. But the reality is not so. See how the marks are calculated in both the cases-

Class X Exams

Thus, even if you select board based exam, 70% marks are given by school and board conducts exam only for 30% marks. The board exam students cannot neglect school based exams. Even in case of school based exams the question papers are sent by CBSE board. Schools have to strictly follow marking scheme sent by the board for evaluation of question paper. To monitor the whole evaluation process, CBSE randomly checks the answer sheets of students appeared in school based examination.

What if a student has been opted for board exam and decided to continue with CBSE after the results?

This is a common question asked by the parents who willingly opt for board exam and wish to continue with CBSE after that. No problem, you can continue with CBSE in same school or any other CBSE school in India BUT first preference in admission will be given to those who have opted school based exam.

The conclusion is if you are not sure and may leave CBSE system after class-10, you must opt for board based exam else you should opt for school based exam.
