Take a glass beaker fix two electrodes. The positive electrode acts as anode &negative electrode act as cathode. Fill 1/3 of beaker with water. Take two test tubes. Insert on electrodes. Observe the level of water in the test tubes. Connect the electrodes to a battery. Pass the electricity for a period of time. Later switch off the current and observe the level of water in test tubes. The level of water in the test tubes is decreased. The free space in the test tubes is filled with H2 & O2 gases. Oxygen gas is evolved at anode and hydrogen gas released at cathode.

Following were the social, economic, political and intellectual causes of the French Revolution:
Social - The social conditions in France in late 18th century were extremely unequal and exploitative. The clergy and the nobility formed the first two Estates and were the most privileged classes in the French society. They were exempt from payment of taxes to the State. On the other hand, the Third Estate that consisted of peasants and workers formed the majority of the population. They were burdened with excessive taxes with no political and social rights. As a result, they were extremely discontent.
Economic - As a result of a numerous wars waged by Louis XVI the State coffers were empty. The situation was made even more complex by France’s involvement in the American War of Independence and the faulty system of taxation. While the privileged classes were excused from paying taxes, the Third Estate was more and more burdened with them. The Third Estate also paid taxes to the Church known as 'tithes'.
Political - The Bourbon king of France, Louis XVI was an extremely autocratic and weak willed king who led a life of obscene luxury. This led to a lot of disenchantment among the masses who then were leading life of extreme poverty and widespread hunger.
Intellectual - The 18th century was marked by a conscious refusal by French thinkers of the ‘Divine Rights Theory’. Philosophers like Rousseau, rejected the theory of absolute monarchy and promulgated the doctrine of equality of man and sovereignty of people. They played a pivotal role in exposing the fault lines of old political system, i.e. the ancien regime, and articulated the popular discontent.

Newlands’ law of octaves
- In 1866 an English scientist John Newlands arranged the elements in the order of
increasing atomic masses starting from the hydrogen having lowest atomic mass to the 56th element named thorium having the highest atomic mass among the elements discovered at that time. - It was found that every eighth element possessed properties similar to that of the first. Sodium is the eighth element after Lithium possessing properties similar to one another. Similarly, beryllium and magnesium resemble each other.
- This was comparable to octaves found in music and hence was called the ‘Law of Octaves’ or ‘Newlands’ Law of Octaves’.
- But the Law of Octaves was applicable only up to calcium, after which every eighth element did not resembled the first element.

The two examples of different oxidations of ethanol are as follows:
(i) When Ethanol is burnt readily in air with blue flame.
The products obtained are carbon dioxide, water and release of heat and light.
The chemical reaction is as follows:
C2H5OH + 3O2 → 2CO2 + 3H2O + heat + light
(ii) When Ethanol is heated with alk. Potassium Permanganate solution KMnO4 or Potassium dichromate solution K2Cr2O7, the ethanol is oxidized to form the product as Ethanoic acid.

Foreign trade leads to the combining of market across countries. For e.g Chinese toys in India and Indian readymade garments in other countries result in connecting the markets or integration of market in different countries. Due to opening of foreign trade, commodities move from one market to the other. This increases the choice of goods in the market. As a result prices are similar kinds of commodities in the different markets are likely to become equal. In this way, foreign trade leads to the integration of markets across countries.
