When Douglas decided to overcome his childhood fear of water he preferred to go to YMCA swimming pool to learn swimming because it was safe. It was only two or three feet deep at the shallow end; and although it was nine feet at the other end, the drop was quite gradual.

The instructor built a swimmer out of Douglas piece by piece. For three months he held him high on a rope attached to his belt. He went back and forth across the pool. Panic seized the author every time. The instructor taught Douglas to put his face underwater and exhale and to raise his nose and inhale. Then Douglas had to kick with his legs for many weeks till these relaxed. After seven months the instructor told him to swim the length of the pool.

The writer comes across many barefoot rag-picker children. On asking about not wearing chappals, they offer very solid excuses. One answers that his mother has not brought them down from the shelf. Another points out that he will throw them if she brings. The third one replies that he has never owned a pair all his life. The writer concludes that walking across the country barefoot is a tradition.

The author met Saheb who was a ragpicker in Seemapuri, a place on the outskirts of Delhi. Saheb was happy being a rag picker. He led a carefree life and appeared like the morning birds and disappeared during noon time. He ran around the street with his friend barefooted. Once he had told the author that there were times when he found a one rupee coin or even a ten rupee note among the heap of garbage. This gave him hope and he would dig more into the garbage to try his luck further. Later, one day when the author met Saheb carrying a steel cannister he came to know that the boy was no more a rag picker. He was working in a tea stall down the road. He was paid 800 rupees and he was given all his meals. But when the author asked whether he liked the job, Saheb's face had lost the carefree look. Though he had money, he lost the freedom that rag-picking gave him. He was no longer his own master. Saheb had traded his liberty in exchange for money. He was surely not happy with his life despite the money that he was being paid.
In other words, this change in Saheb's life was comparatively a better one, since he was now working and earning on his own, on the other side of the story, we learn that Saheb himself wasn't very happy with such a change in his life as he thought that his responsibilities as a servant have snatched away the freedom he had when he was just a ragpicker.

converting a Binary to Decimal number would be:
| Decimal Digit Value | 256 | 128 | 64 | 32 | 16 | 8 | 4 | 2 | 1 |
| Binary Digit Value | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
By adding together ALL the decimal number values from right to left at the positions that are represented by a “1” gives us: (256) + (64) + (32) + (4) + (1) = 35710 or three hundred and fifty seven as a decimal number.
Then, we can convert binary to decimal by finding the decimal equivalent of the binary array of digits 1011001012 and expanding the binary digits into a series with a base of 2 giving an equivalent of 35710 in decimal or denary.
Note that in number conversion systems “subscripts” are used to indicate the relevant base numbering system, 10012 = 910. If no subscript is used after a number, then it is generally assumed to be decimal.
Repeated Division-by-2 Method
We have seen above how to convert binary to decimal numbers, but how do we convert a decimal number into a binary number. An easy method of converting decimal to binary number equivalents is to write down the decimal number and to continually divide-by-2 (two) to give a result and a remainder of either a “1” or a “0” until the final result equals zero.
So for example. Convert the decimal number 29410 into its binary number equivalent.
| Number | 294 |
Dividing each decimal number by “2” as shown will give a result plus a remainder. If the decimal number being divided is even then the result will be whole and the remainder will be equal to “0”. If the decimal number is odd then the result will not divide completely and the remainder will be a “1”. The binary result is obtained by placing all the remainders in order with the least significant bit (LSB) being at the top and the most significant bit (MSB) being at the bottom. |
|
| divide by 2 | |||
| result | 147 | remainder | 0 (LSB) |
| divide by 2 | |||
| result | 73 | remainder | 1 |
| divide by 2 | |||
| result | 36 | remainder | 1 |
| divide by 2 | |||
| result | 18 | remainder | 0 |
| divide by 2 | |||
| result | 9 | remainder | 0 |
| divide by 2 | |||
| result | 4 | remainder | 1 |
| divide by 2 | |||
| result | 2 | remainder | 0 |
| divide by 2 | |||
| result | 1 | remainder | 0 |
| divide by 2 | |||
| result | 0 | remainder | 1 (MSB) |
This divide-by-2 decimal to binary conversion technique gives the decimal number 29410 an equivalent of 1001001102 in binary, reading from right to left. This divide-by-2 method will also work for conversion to other number bases.
Then we can see that the main characteristics of a Binary Numbering System is that each “binary digit” or “bit” has a value of either “1” or “0” with each bit having a weight or value double that of its previous bit starting from the lowest or least significant bit (LSB) and this is called the “sum-of-weights” method.
So we can convert a decimal number into a binary number either by using the sum-of-weights method or by using the repeated division-by-2 method, and convert binary to decimal by finding its sum-of-weights.

Platinum with the atomic number 78 and an atomic mass of 195 in the periodic table is an extremely rare element found in the crust of the earth. The word Platinum is derived from Platina (Spanish word meaning ‘little silver’), because of its grey-white silvery colour. With an availability of 5g/kg in the earth’s crust, it is one of the rarest elements and is highly valuable for the same reason. Although it was discovered relatively later by European scientists, it has been found in Egyptian tombs dating back to 1200 BC.
