Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: Stereotypes are standardized and simplified ideas of groups, based on some prejudices, they are not derived from objective facts, but rather subjective and often unverifiable ideas. As Sociologist Charles E. Hurst states "One reason for stereotypes is the lack of personal, concrete familiarity that individuals have with persons in other racial or ethnic groups. Lack of familiarity encourages the lumping together of unknown individuals". The existence of stereotypes may be explained by the need of groups of people to view themselves as more normal or more superior than other groups. Consequently, stereotypes may be used to justify ill-founded prejudices or ignorance and prevent people of stereotyped groups from entering or succeeding in various activities or fields. The stereotyping group are, generally, reluctant to reconsider their attitudes and behaviour towards stereotyped group. Stereotypes may affect people negatively. This includes forming inaccurate and distorted images and opinions of people. Stereotypes may also be used for scapegoating or for making general erroneous judgments about people. Some stereotyping people may feel comfortable when they prevent themselves from emotional identification with the stereotyped group, which leads to xenophobic or racist behaviour. Finally, another serious consequence of stereotypes is the feeling of inferiority that the stereotyped people may have and which may impair their performance. Q.1. Stereotypes are formed because (a) some people want to prove themselves to be superior (b) some people are reluctant to identify themselves (c ) people are of inherently different races (d) people are think it is harmless2. Choose the option which best captures the central idea of the passage: 1. “Film and novel characters are often stereotyped, but racial stereotyping in many novels or films creates & encourages labelling, discrimination & racism. ― Angelica Hopes 2. “Once you label me you negate me.”― Søren Kierkegaard 3. “Instead of being presented with stereotypes by age, ***, color, class, or religion, children must have the opportunity to learn that within each range, some people are loathsome and some are delightful.”― Margaret Mead 4. Attempting to get at truth means rejecting stereotypes and cliches.-Harold Evans Option 1. Option 2 Option 3 Option 4 Q.3. According to the passage, the most serious consequence of stereotyping in the stereotyped group is (a) they feel inferior and hence it adversely affects their performance (b) they feel the need to prove themselves all the time leading to stress (c ) they became racists (d ) they are not included into the mainstream society Q.4. The author attempts to ………………………. through this passage. (a) make light of the prejudices in our society(b) tell us the potentially harmful consequences of stereotyping © that stereotyping has always existed in our society (d ) the stereotyped people suffer less and hence its harmless Q.5. According to the passage what is not likely to happen: (a) Stereotyping will not affect the society adversely (b) Stereotyped people will fell no animosity towards stereotyping people (c ) Stereotyping will be easily overcome (d ) Stereotyping will lead to increased racist behaviour Q.6. What does the phrase ‘lumping together’ as used in the passage mean? (a) putting people in a group because of lack of knowledge (b) putting people in a group because of your dislike of them (c ) putting people in a group with the intention of harming them (d ) putting people in a group to make fun of them

A theodolite works by combining optical plummets (or plumb bobs), a spirit (bubble level), and graduated circles to find vertical and horizontal angles in surveying. An optical plummet ensures the theodolite is placed as close to exactly vertical above the survey point. The internal spirit level makes sure the device is level to to the horizon. The graduated circles, one vertical and one horizontal, allow the user to actually survey for angles.

  1. The Congress party succeeded in maintaining its dominance until 1967 due to the following reasons:
    1. The Congress party was supported by elites, educated business classes and middle classes people. It also got support from peasants because of its socialist nature. In this way had support from every section of society.
    2. It had many popular faces like Jawaharlal Nehru, C Rajgopalachari, Vallabhbhai Patel etc. Moreover, Jawaharlal Nehru was charismatic and a very popular leader. The popularity of these Congress leaders had a great impact over the face of Congress in General Elections.
    3. Congress worked at the upper level as well as at the grass root level. Congress was popularised due to the participation in the civil disobedience movement. Its role in the National Movement for freedom had been a major reason for its success in First three General Elections.
    4. During the period of Nehru Ji, Congress attained mass popularity, but the powerful narrow elite of Congress continued to benefit from the low level of political consciousness of the electorate.
    5. The traditional localities made Congress, a one-party dominance.

If you look up at the moon at night, you would have noticed that it changes its shape every day. This is because the heavenly body has no light of its own; it can only reflect light from the sun. Only the side of the moon which faces the sun can reflect this light and can appear bright; the other side appears dark. As this celestial bod revolves around the earth we can see different amounts of the region illuminated by the sun. Thus, it appears to change its shape.
