    A Visit to Agra It was January 2003.1 woke up before dawn and took the Shatabdi Express at 6.15 a.m. from Delhi bound for Agra. I met a newly married couple who belonged to Himachal Pradesh. We talked with one another and got off the train. I entered the once grand city, Agra. I saw the dense traffic, numerous rickshaw pullers, cars, people and vendors selling religious artifacts, plastic toys, spices and sweets. I went to the Taj Mahal which is one of the seven wonders of the world. It was entirely of white marble and had a magical quality of colour changing with varying of light and shadow. The white marble of Taj Mahal has gemstones of multi coloured engraved in it. The reflection of the Taj Mahal could be seen in the pond. There were many tourists, school children and tourist guides.

    प्राण सूखना – डर लगना
    रात में बाग़ से घर लौटते समय भेड़िये को देख कर रामलाल के प्राण सूख गए।
    हंसी खेल होना- छोटी मोटी बात होना
    तुम तो ऐसे बात कर रहे हो जैसे बिटिया का विवाह कोई हंसीं-खेल हो ।
    आंखें फोड़ना बड़े ध्यान से पढ़ना
    भाई, रमेश को तो परीक्षा में प्रथम आना ही था, आखिर साल भर आँखें फोड़ कर पढाई की है।
    गाढ़ी कमाई – मेहनत की कमाई
    सुरेश की दूकान में चोरी क्या हुई, उसका तो दिल ही टूट गया। आखिर उसकी गाढ़ी कमाई थी, कोई हराम की कमाई नहीं थी।
    जिगर के टुकड़े टुकड़े होना- हृदय पर भारी आघात लगना
    बेटे की शहादत की खबर सुनते ही वीरपाल के जिगर के टुकड़े-टुकड़े हो गए।
    हिम्मत टूटना- साहस समाप्त होना
    भाई, जब से दूकान में आग लगी और मेरा सारा सामान जल गया तब से तो मेरी हिम्मत टूट गयी है।
    जान तोड़ मेहनत करना- अत्यधिक परिश्रम करना
    लाला जी, अपने पिता की सौगंध खा कर कहता हूँ, जान-तोड़ मेहनत करूंगा लेकिन आपकी एक-एक पाई-पाई चुका कर रहूंगा।
    दबे पांव आना -चोरी चोरी प्रवेश करना
    सतीश जब बाहर शराब पीकर लौटा तो घर में दबे पांव घुसते समय पिता ने पकड़ लिया और बहुत खरी-खोटी सुनाई।
    घुड़किया खाना- डांट सहना
    नौकरी में तो साहब की हजार घुड़कियाँ खा कर भी चुप रहना पड़ता है, रोजी-रोटी का मामला जो ठहरा।
    आड़े हाथों लेना- कठोर व्यवहार करना
    रमेश मेधावी छात्र है लेकिन गलत संगती में उसका परीक्षा परिणाम खराब आया तो अध्यापक जी ने उसे आड़े हाथों लिया।
    घाव पर नमक छिड़कना – दुखी को और दुख देना
    एक तो लाला शामिल व्यापार में नुक्सान की वाकः से पहले ही दुखी थे ऊपर से सेठ दुनीचंद ने नगर व्यापार संघ के अध्यक्ष पद के चुनाव में उन्हें हरा कर उनके घाव पर नमक छिड़क दिया।
    तलवार खींचना- लड़ाई के लिए उद्धत रहना
    वैसे तो अजय-विजय दोनों सगे भाई हैं लेकिन खेतों के बंटवारे को लेकर दोनों में जब देखो तलवारें खिंची रहती हैं।
    अंधे के हाथ बटेर लगना- योग्यता ना होने पर भी मूल्यवान वस्तु मिल जाना
    वैसे तो शर्मा जी को कार्यालय का कोई काम नहीं आता है लेकिन चौधरी जी के अस्वस्थ होने के कारण विभागाध्यक्ष का चार्ज और मिल गया, इसे कहते हैं अंधे के हाथ बटेर लगना।
    चुल्लू भर पानी देने वाला- मुश्किल वक्त में मदद करने वाला
    पड़ोसियों से बना कर रखो वीरसिंघ, अभिमान अच्छा नहीं होता, कल कोई दिक्कत आई तो कोई चुल्लू भर पानी देने वाला न होगा।
    दांतों पसीना आना – बहुत परेशानी में पड़ना
    बेटी की शादी करने में रामपाल जी को दांतों पसीने आ गए।
    लोहे के चने चबाना – बहुत मुश्किलों का सामना करना
    रानी लक्समी बाई को परास्त करने में अंग्रेजों को लोहे के चने चबाने पड़ गए।
    चक्कर खाना- भुलावे में पड़ जाना
    ठग ने गहने दुगने करने का लालच देकर ऐसा चक्कर चलाया कि मोहल्ले की कई औरतें अपने जेवरों से हाथ धो बैठी।
    आटे दाल का भाव मालूम होना – कठिनाइयों का सामना करना
    बाप की कमाई पर बहुत ऐश कर ली तुमने, अब खुद गृहस्थी का बोझ उठाओगे तो आते-दाल का भाव मालूम होगा।
    जमीन पर पांव ना रखना- बहुत खुश हो जाना
    बेटे की सरकारी नौकरी की खबर सुन कर गुप्ता जी से तो मानो पांव जमीन पर न रखे जा रहे थे।
    हाथ पांव फूल जाना- मुश्किल समय में घबरा जाना
    फेरों के ठीक पहले दामाद ने कार की मांग कर डाली तो वर्मा जी के तो हाथ पांव फूल गए।
