| Democracy | Monarchy |
| When a country is ruled by a Government elected by its people through elections, then it is called a Democracy | When a country is ruled by Kings and Queens, when the right to rule a country is passed through a dynasty and not through elections, then it is called a monarchy. |
| The elected representatives make the laws, rules and regulations on behalf of the people, for the welfare of the people. | The laws are framed by the Kings and Queens. People have no say in the formulation of laws. |
| The elected representatives are held accountable by the people of the country. Hence elections are held and representatives lose their right to rule if they do not meet the expectations of the people | The Kings and Queens have no accountability. People do not have the power to remove Kings and Queens from power if they are dissatisfied with their administration. |
| People have the freedom to give their feedback on policies, have the option to bring about changes in the policies and they have the right to condemn the Government. | People do not have the right to condemn the Monarchy. |
| People do not face oppression from a democratically elected Government | People may face oppression if the ruler is a tyrant. |

Nature of Roots
A quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0 has
(i) two distinct real roots, if b2 – 4ac > 0,
(ii) two equal real roots, if b2 – 4ac = 0,
(iii) no real roots, if b2 – 4ac < 0.
Since b2 – 4ac determines whether the quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0 has real roots or not, b2 – 4ac is called the discriminant of this quadratic equation

Mechanism of respiration involves the breathing mechanism and exchange of gases.
The gaseous exchange occurs by diffusion in the alveoli. It depends upon the pressure differences between blood and tissues, or atmospheric air and blood. The exchange of gases takes place at the surface of the alveolus.
The mechanism of breathing has already been explained above. Let us have a look at the steps involved in the exchange of gases.
Exchange of Gases
The exchange of gases takes place in the following manner:
Transport Of Oxygen
- Oxygen in the blood is carried to the tissue in two forms- Oxyhaemoglobin- chemical composition of oxygen with haemoglobin, and solution of oxygen in the blood plasma.
- The oxygen in the blood combines with haemoglobin when the concentration of oxygen is high in the blood.
- Oxyhemoglobin, being unstable, dissociates to release oxygen. Low oxygen, low pH and high temperatures stimulate the dissociation process.

Hydrogen gas is usually liberated when an acid reacts with an active metal. For testing the presence of hydrogen gas, bring a burning candle near the test tube in which reaction has taken place. If the gas burns with a popping sound, the gas is hydrogen.

| Basis | Acid | Base |
| Definition | An acid is any chemical compound once dissolved in water produces a solution with hydrogen ion activity more than purified water | A base is an aqueous substance that could absorb hydrogen ions. |
| Strength | Relies on the concentration of the hydronium ions | Relies on the concentration of the hydroxide ions |
| Examples | Acetic acid CH3COOH and sulphuric acid | Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Ammonia |
| Characteristics (Physical) | Would depend upon the temperature acids would look solid, liquid or in the form of gas. It would also have a sour taste. | Bases would feel slippery and solid in nature (except for ammonia, which is gaseous). It would have a bitter taste. |
| Disassociation | Acids would release hydrogen ions (h+) when mixed with water | Bases would release hydroxide ions(OH-) when mixed with water |
| Test with Litmus | Would turn litmus paper red | Would turn litmus paper blue |
