Oxides of metals which have both acidic as well as basic behaviour are known as amphoteric oxides. Such metallic oxides react with acids as well as base to produce salt and water. Examples of Amphoteric oxides are aluminium oxide and zinc oxide.

Anil made a lot of money by fits and starts. He would borrow money this week and lend the following week. He would be tensed about the next pay cheque, but as and when he gets the cheque, he goes out and celebrates. He writes for magazines, which is the queer way of making money for his living. He also sells his books to publishers.

For a quadratic equation ax² + bx + c =0, the term b² - 4ac is called discriminant (D) of the quadratic equation because it determines whether the quadratic equation has real roots or not ( nature of roots).
D= b² - 4ac
So a quadratic equation ax² + bx + c =0, has
i) Two distinct real roots, if b² - 4ac >0 , then x= -b/2a + √D/2a &x= -b/2a - √D/2a
ii) Two equal real roots, if b² - 4ac = 0 , then x= -b/2a or -b/2a
iii) No real roots, if b² - 4ac <0
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Solution:
i)
x² – 3x + 5 = 0
Comparing it with ax² + bx + c = 0, we get
a = 2, b = -3 and c = 5
Discriminant (D) = b² – 4ac
⇒ ( – 3)2 – 4 (2) (5) = 9 – 40
⇒ – 31<0
As b2 – 4ac < 0,
Hence, no real root is possible .
(ii) 3x² – 4√3x + 4 = 0
Comparing it with ax² + bx + c = 0, we get
a = 3, b = -4√3 and c = 4
Discriminant(D) = b² – 4ac
⇒ (-4√3)2 – 4(3)(4)
⇒ 48 – 48 = 0
As b² – 4ac = 0,
Hence, real roots exist & they are equal to each other.
the roots will be –b/2a and –b/2a.
-b/2a = -(-4√3)/2×3 = 4√3/6 = 2√3/3
multiplying the numerator & denominator by √3
(2√3) (√3) / (3)(√3) = 2 ×3 / 3 ×√3 = 2/√3
Hence , the equal roots are 2/√3 and 2/√3.

Answer: Ionic compounds are formed by transfer of electrons between metals and non metals resulting into cations and anions respectively. They are held by strong electrostatic forces and thus cannot be separated.
But when ionic compounds are dissolved in water, they result into ions due to high dielectric constant of water, thus the production of ions help to carry electrons and thus conduct electricity.

Current and Resistance in series connection of resistors
- Series connection is a combnation of resistors connected end to end.
- It forms a linear connection arrangement of all the resistors connected in series.
- So the amount of current flowing through each resistor is equal to the amount of current flowing through the entire circuit.
- Thus, in series connection the current remains same across the resistors.
- The equivalent resistance of such resistors is given by the sum of resistances of all the resistors connected in series.
- Mathematically,

- This explains that the resistance of the entire circuit of resistors connected in series will be more than the resistance of the individual resistors.
- Resistance is the actual resistance to the flow of current through the circuit.
- Therefore as the equivalent resistance of the resistors connected in series gets added up, the flow of current in a series circuit decreases due to this added resistance.

The poet is describing Amanda, a little girl who is always pointed out by her mother for her mistakes and how she imagines her life to be. The poet says that the mother is pointing out Amanda for biting nails which is a bad habit. Next she asks her to sit straight without bending her shoulders. Amanda who has habit of bending her shoulders and sitting lazily is being pointed out because her mother wants her to sit in the right posture. At this point of time, when she is being scolded by her mother, she imagines herself to be in a deep green sea. She says that she wants to be the only resident of this beautiful green sea. She imagines herself like a mermaid who is alone there and leads her life in a very relaxing way. She says that she wants to be carried away by the current of water and feel the relaxing environment there.

The owner of a taxi company decides to run all the taxis on CNG fuel instead of petrol/diesel. The taxi charges in city comprises of fixed charges together with the charge for the distance covered. For a journey of 12 km, the charge paid is 789 and for journey of 20 km, the charge paid is ₹145.
What will a person have to pay for travelling a distance of 30 km? (2014)
Solution:
Let the fixed charges = 7x
and the charge per km = ₹y
According to the Question,

Putting the value of y in (i), we get
x + 12(7) = 89
x + 84 = 89 ⇒ x = 89 – 84 = 5
Total fare for 30 km = x + 30y = 5 + 30(7)
= 5 + 210 = ₹215

The Monkey and Two Cats
Once there two cats. They found a piece of bread. They couldn’t agree on how to divide it. They went to a monkey to seek his help in the matter. The monkey was clever fellow. He haphazardly divided the piece of bread into two. He told that this division is not correct and ate the smaller piece. He repeated the process of breaking the piece of bread randomly and eating up the smaller piece, till he had eaten up the whole piece of the bread.
Moral: always choose an honest judge.

(3y)² - 2(3y)(2) + 2² - 2² + 2 = 0
(3y - 2)² - 4 + 2 = 0
(3y - 2)² = 2
(3y - 2) =

3y = √2 + 2
y = (√2 + 2)/3
taking (-ve)
3y = -√2 + 2
y = (2 - √2)/2
