Xylem transports water and minerals obtained from the soil.

Phloem transports products of photosynthesis from the leaves to other parts of the plant.
Vessels, tracheids of the roots, stems and leaves are connected to form a continuous system in xylem cells to transport water to all the parts of the plants.

Cells in the roots which are in contact with the soil take up ions which creates a difference of concentration between the roots and the soil and therefore water moves to the roots to eliminate the difference.

Water is moved into xylem of roots and from where it is pushed upward.

Plants use different mechanisms to pull water upwards through xylem like-

  • Water which is lost through stomata is replaced by water absorbed by the roots.
  • Evaporation of water from leaf creates a suction force which pulls water.

The loss of water in the form of water vapor is called

The water from the soil reaches the leaves by the tissue called Xylem. The root hairs on the root absorb water from the soil and through osmosis the water is transported to leaves through the tissue xylem.

The development of the German and Italian nation states in the nineteenth century

Political fragmentation: Till the middle of the nineteenth century, the present-day nations of Germany and Italy were fragmented into separate regions and kingdoms ruled by different princely houses.

Revolutionary uprisings: Nineteenth-century Europe was characterised by both popular uprisings of the masses and revolutions led by the educated, liberal middle classes. The middle classes belonging to the different German regions came together to form an all-German National Assembly in 1848. However, on facing opposition from the aristocracy and military, and on losing its mass support base, it was forced to disband.

In the Italian region, during the 1830s, revolutionaries like Giuseppe Mazzini sought to establish a unitary Italian Republic. However, the revolutionary uprisings of 1831 and 1848 failed to unite Italy.

Unification with the help of the army: After the failure of the revolutions, the process of German and Italian unification was continued by the aristocracy and the army. Germany was united by the Prussian chief minister Otto von Bismarck  with the help of the Prussian army and bureaucracy. The German empire was proclaimed in 1871.

The Italian state of Sardinia-Piedmont played a role similar to that played by Prussia. Count Camillo de Cavour (the Chief Minister) led the movement to unite the separate states of nineteenth-century Italy with the help of the army and an alliance with France. The regions annexed by Giuseppe Garibaldi and his Red Shirts joined with the northern regions to form a united Italy. The italian nation was proclaimed in 1861. The papal states joined in 1870.

Peter van Daan, a shy boy of sixteen, was unlike other boys. A thoughtful and sensible observer, he was different from his loud and brash parents. As he had no friends and could not reach out to his parents, he appeared sullen and difficult. Initially, Anne considered him to be hypochondriac and lazy. However, he turned out to be peace-loving, tolerant and extremely easygoing.
His contemplative years were spent in the annex. He was much more closed than Anne was and took time to open up as Anne says is characteristic of uncommunicative types. He began confiding in Anne and made a determined effort to express his innermost self. Their relationship was not romantic, but forged out of a necessity to find a kindred spirit in such trying times. In Anne, Peter found the tenderness and comfort that he had been searching for; it made him offer his friendship for the first time to someone.

The sum of two numbers is 9 and the sum of their reciprocal is 1/2.

Let the numbers be x and y respectively.

Sum of numbers is 9.

⇒ x + y = 9.... (i)

⇒ y = 9 - x .... (ii)

Sum of reciprocals is 1/2.

⇒ .... (iii)

Now, on solving (iii),

Putting the value of (i) and (ii) here, we get -

Hence, the required numbers are 6 and 3.

Mehak Parashar 5 years, 4 months ago

By not going to solve whole we can say that 3+6=9 and by its reciprocal we are getting 1/2

The largest number that can divide both the numbers will be the HCF of the two numbers -

So prime factors of the numbers –

1152 = 27 × 32

1664 = 27 × 13.

∴ HCF of number = 27 = 128.

Because of total variation in the amount of light..the light come form planets is nullifying.... thereby the planets do not twinkle

Yogita Ingle 5 years, 4 months ago

Unlike stars that twinkle at night, planets do not. Instead they shine steadily due to the distance between these planets. Unlike stars that are so far away from earth that even in the most powerful of telescopes they look merely like dots or points and appear to twinkle due to “refraction” when they enter the  earth’s atmosphere. But planets are much more closer to earth. Their appearance is that of tiny disks through telescopes. When the light from these planets enters the earth’s atmosphere they also go through refraction. But light from both the ends of the planet, travel away from each other in opposite direction, thus cancelling each other’s effects. So they appear steadily instead of twinkling like stars.

The human digestive system is a series of organs that converts food into essential nutrients that are absorbed into the body. The digestive organs also move waste material out of the body. The enzymes in saliva help break down foods, and the lubrication function of saliva makes it easier for food to be swallowed. The stomach's gastric juice, which is primarily a mix of hydrochloric acid and pepsin, starts breaking down proteins and killing potentially harmful bacteria. The liver has a wide range of functions, including detoxification, protein synthesis and production of bile for digestion. The function of the large intestine, which is about five feet long (1.5 meters), is primarily the storage and fermentation of indigestible matter. Related:
