The smell of the bleaching powder is strongly chlorine because they can contain the chlorine gas . It can not dissolve in water because in the preparation of the bleaching powder the use of the calcium . When the bleaching powder can under goes in the water then the calcium can react with the water to form the slacked lime which is commonly known as calcium hydroxide
