Characteristics of power sharing are:
- Power sharing is a system of governance where all the communities in the society participate in the policy making. In power sharing, the majority cannot impose its will over the minority communities.
- Power sharing is the spirit of democracy because it is one of the foundational principles on which the concept of democratic rule is based. In a democracy, the people have a right to be consulted on how they should be governed and all the citizens have same and equal political and legal rights.
- Each individual and community has a say in governance through their elected representatives. This is the essence of power sharing which grants equal rights to each citizen and attempts to reduce the possibility of social friction and unrest among communities through peaceful solution of conflicts.
- The concept of power sharing thus leads to the stability and subsequently development in the country.
