An example of rancidity is when a chips pack is exposed to atmospheric air which results in a change in taste and odor. Cooked food left without refrigerator for a long time becomes rancid. After independence in 1948 the democratically elected Sri Lankan Government adopted a series of Majoritarian measures to establish Sinhala supremacy by passing an Act in 1956. The measures were like;
(i) Sinhala was recognised as the only official language in Sri Lanka. Tamil language was not given due importance.
(ii) The Sri Lankan Government formulated a policy in which only Sinhala applicants were preferred for job in university and other Government jobs.
(iii) The new constitution of Sri Lanka declared that the Buddhism would be promoted by the state.
(iv) Thus, all these government measures coming after one another, gradually increased the feeling of alienation.

- Italy was politically fragmented into various small states which were ruled by monarchies.
- During the mid-nineteenth century, only the state of Sardinia-Piedmont was ruled by the Italian monarchy. The northern states were under the Austrian monarchy, Central Italy was under the control of the Pope and the states in the south were under the control of the Bourbon kings of Spain.
- Giuseppe Mazzini was a revolutionary who actively supported the unification of the Italian states. For achieving this aim, he formed a secret society called ‘Young Italy’.
- The state of Sardinia-Piedmont took the responsibility of fulfilling this task after the failed uprisings in 1831 and 1848. The king of Sardinia-Piedmont, Victor Emmanuel II, was actively helped by his Chief Minister Cavour. Cavour led the process of the unification of Italy.
- In 1859, the state of Sardinia-Piedmont defeated the Austrians. In 1860, the Italian forces helped by Giuseppe Garibaldi and his volunteers marched into southern Italy and unified it with Italy.
- King Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed as the king of united Italy. The complete unification of Italy was achieved in 1871.

The function of human heart :-
* It is a four chambered structure consisting - the right auricle , the left auricle , right ventricle and left ventricle.
* The Auricles are smaller and placed above the ventricles. Auricles are partitioned by a muscular called septum.
* The right auricle receives the deoxygenated blood from all parts of the body except the lungs. It pumps this blood into the right ventricle. Then , the right ventricle pumps the deoxygenated blood to the lungs. The left auricle receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through pulmonary veins. It pumps this blood into the left ventricle. The left ventricle pumps the oxygenated blood to the distant organs in the body.
* Each auricle communicates with the ventricle of its side by a pore which is guarded by valves. These valves allow the blood to flow from the auricles to the ventricles but check its return to the auricles. Thus , the heart there is a complete separation of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. The heart is enclosed in a double membrane called pericardium. It contains fluid which protects the heart from any shock or mechanical injury.
*The heart collects blood through both the auricles and then distributes it through ventricles. The action of heart includes contraction and relaxation of the auricles and ventricles.
* A contraction of heart is called systole and diastole. The contraction and relaxation occur in an automatic rhythmic fashion. The auricles and ventricles contract alternately. The rhythmic contraction and relaxation of heart is called a heart beat.
