The phenomenon of change in the path of a beam of light as it passes from one medium to another is called refraction of light.
The cause of refraction is the change in the speed of light as it goes from one medium to another.
A ray of light travelling in air emerges into water, it will bend towards the normal after entering in to water because as ray of light travels from lighter denser medium to higher denser medium, rays get bend towards the normal due to refraction.

Functional Groups: All organic compounds are derivatives of hydrocarbons.
The derivatives are obtained by replacing one or more hydrogen atoms with some other atom or a group of atoms.
The new set of compounds formed after replacement has functions different from the parent hydrocarbon.
Functional group:
An atom or a group of atoms present in the molecules, which determines the characteristics property of the organic compounds, is called the functional group.

Giuseppe Mazzini He was an Italian revolutionary, who was born in Genoa in 1807. He was sent into exile at the age of 24 in 1831 for attempting a revolution in Liguria. He founded two secret societies, namely Young Italy and Young Europe. He inspired the young members of these societies to involve in revolutionary activities.
Following his ideas and on the model of his secret societies, more such societies were set up in Germany, France, Switzerland and Poland. Austrian Chancellor Duke Matternich once described him as ‘the most dangerous enemy of our social order’.

In Belgium, leaders recognised the existence of regional differences and cultural diversities. The Belgian government accommodated its diverse ethnic population in the following manner:
- Constitution says that the number of Dutch and French speaking ministers shall be equal in the Central government. Thus, no single community can make decisions unilaterally.
- Many powers of the Central Government have been given to the state governments, of the two regions of the country. The state governments are not subordinate to the Central government.
- Brussels has a separate government in which both the communities have equal representation.
- There is a third kind of government, called the ‘community government’. This government is elected by the people belonging to one language community—Dutch, French and German speaking, no matter where they live. This government has the power regarding cultural education and language related issues.
These arrangements helped to avoid a civic strife between the two major communities and a possible division of the country on linguistic lines.

We learn the following from the stories of Belgium and Sri Lanka:
a. The best way to bring about peace and stability in a society which is characterised by ethnic , linguistic diversity is to share power among the diverse groups, to involve them in the decision making process. Such a power sharing arrangement will mitigate the chances of conflict in the society a sin case of Belgium. Sri lanka on the other witnessed worst form of civil war resulting in killings of thousands.
b. We also learn that power sharing is the very spirit of democracy as it expands democracy to the grass root level making it more inclusive and representative in nature.
c. Power sharing also gives representation and political voice to the minorities and prevents the imposition of majoritarinism policy to sought to establish the supremacy and dominance of the majority community as in case of Sri Lanka where the interest of Tamil minorities were totally disregarded.
d. Most importantly we learn that power sharing will ensure justice, fairness, equality in the society by accommodating varied interests.

It is defined as the natural process that causes the transformation of pure metals to undesirable substances when they react with substances like water or air. This reaction causes damage and disintegration of the metal starting from the portion of the metal exposed to the environment and spreading to the entire bulk of the metal.
There are various methods to prevent corrosion. These include,
1. Electroplating
It is the process by which a metal (I) is coated with a thin layer of another metal (II) using electrolysis. In this way, the new metal coating protects the metal (I) from corrosion.
2. Cathodic Protection
In this process, the base metal is connected to a sacrificial metal that corrodes instead of the base metal. By doing so this sacrificial metal (which is more reactive than the base metal) will give out electrons and get oxidised. The ions thus formed takes part in the corrosion reactions thereby saving the base metal.
3. Galvanization
This process involves coating iron with a thin layer of zinc. It is generally done by dipping iron in molten zinc. The zinc layer coating thus protect the iron inside from corrosion
4. Painting and Greasing
Providing a layer of paint or grease on the metal can prevent the exposure of the metal with the external environment thereby preventing corrosion.
5. Choosing the right material can also help prevent corrosion. Eg: Aluminium and stainless steel are highly corrosion resistant
6. Using corrosion Inhibitor
Corrosion inhibitors are chemicals which when added to the corrosion environment has the ability to cut down the rate of corrosion.

- The non-biodegradable chemicals like pesticides and insecticides enter the food chains in land and aquatic ecosystems and then accumulate progressively at each trophic level. This is known as biological magnification. Example - Species like Shark, Swordfish, Orange Roughy, Tuna, King Mackerel, or Tilefish contain proportionally larger levels of toxic mercury than smaller fish and shellfish.
