Standard time is the synchronization of clocks within a geographical area to a single standard time, rather than using solar time or a locally chosen meridian (longitude) to establish a local mean time standard.

A country may have many longitudes running across it and there is a time gap of 4 minutes between each longitude. For example, the time gap between the western point of Gujarat and the easternmost point of Arunachal Pradesh has a time gap of 2 hours. So, there is a lot of confusion in the whole country. Therefore, a standard meridian should be established in each country as it is the central longitude of the whole country so that there is an equal time in all the country.

Plasma

The liquid state of blood can be contributed to plasma as it makes up for 50% of blood. It is pale yellow in colour and when separated, it consists of salts, nutrients, water and enzymes. Blood plasma also contains important proteins and other components necessary for overall health. Hence, blood plasma transfusions are given to patients with liver failure and life-threatening injuries.

Red Blood Cells (RBC)

Red blood cells consist of Haemoglobin, a protein. They are produced by the bone marrow to primarily carry oxygen to the body and carbon dioxide away from it.

White Blood Cells (WBC)

White blood cells are responsible for fighting foreign pathogens (such as bacteria, viruses, fungi) that enter our body. They circulate throughout our body and originate from the bone marrow.

Platelets

Tiny disc-shaped cells that help regulate blood flow when any part of the body is damaged, thereby aiding in fast recovery through clotting of blood.

  • Importance of pH in Everyday life:

pH change and survival of animals -

  1. Our body works well within a narrow pH range of 7.0 to 7.8.
  2. When the pH of rain water is less than 5.6, it is known as acid rain.
  3. When  this  acid  rain  flows  into  rivers,  it  lowers  the  pH  of the river  water making the survival  of aquatic life difficult.

pH in our digestive system

  1. Our stomach produces hydrochloric acid which helps in the digestion of food without harming the stomach.
  2. Sometimes excess acid is produced in the stomach which causes indigestion.
  3. To get rid of this pain, bases called antacids are used.
  4. Antacids are a group of mild bases which react with the excess acid and neutralise it.
  5. Commonly used antacids are magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] and sodium bicarbonate[NaHCO3].

Urine is formed in the kidneys through a filtration of blood. The urine is then passed through the ureters to the bladder, where it is stored. During urination, the urine is passed from the bladder through the urethra to the outside of the body. The kidneys filter unwanted substances from the blood and produce urine to excrete them. There are three main steps of urine formation: glomerular filtration, reabsorption, and secretion. These processes ensure that only waste and excess water are removed from the body. Bowman's capsule (or the Bowman capsule, capsula glomeruli, or glomerular capsule) is a cup-like sack at the beginning of the tubular component of a nephron in the mammalian kidney that performs the first step in the filtration of blood to form urine.

In a federal form of government, the central government shares its powers with the various constituent units of the country. For example, in India, power is divided between the government at the Centre and the various State governments. In a unitary form of government, all the power is exercised by only one government.

Difference:

(i) Unitary government has only one level of government whereas a federal government has two or more levels of government.

(ii) In unitary government, the sub-units are subordinate to the centre, whereas in a federation, central government cannot encroach on the rights of state governments.

(iii) In unitary system, centre can order the sub-units which cannot happen in federation.

A federation is preferred because:

(i) It helps in making administration effective and efficient.

(ii) It helps to accommodate all diverse groups.
