Germany: Nationalist feelings were widespread among middle class Germans, who in 1848 tried to unite different regions of the German confederation. This movement was suppressed by combined forces of monarchy and military, supported by large landowners (Junkers) of Prussia. Then Prussia's chief minister, Otto von Bismarck, took the leadership of the movement for national unification. Three wars over seven years with Austria, Denmark and France ended in Prussian victory and completed the process of unification. In January 1871, Prussian king William I was proclaimed German Emperor in a ceremony held at Versailles.
Italy: Prime Minister Cavour and King Victor Emmanuel formed an alliance with France to overthrow Austria. This alliance united northern Italy. At the same time in the South, Garibaldi used guerilla warfare to unite southern Italy. People in the south voted to join the people in the north, thus uniting Italy.

Self Help Group (SHG) is a group of about 15-20 members who pool their savings together. Following are the advantages of SHG:
- Members can take loans from the group’s savings themselves on a decided rate of interest. The rate of interest is much lower than the interest that is charged by the informal sources.
After two years of regular savings, the SHG can also take a loan from the bank. Loan is given on the name of the group and creates tremendous opportunities for self-employment of the members.
-
Due to SHG, the poor members are able to avail loan even in the absence of collateral.
-
Many women as the members of SHGs have become economically independent. This has led to women empowerment at the rural levels.

A displacement reaction is the one wherein the atom or a set of atoms is displaced by another atom in a molecule. For instance, when Iron is added to a copper sulphate solution, it displaces the copper metal.
A + B-C → A-C + B
The above equation exists when A is more reactive than B.
A and B have to be either:
- Halogens where C indicates a cation.
- Different metals wherein C indicates an anion.
